I'm sure someone can say it in more precise terms, but in my understanding, in a broadstruck coin like this, which is struck out of the collar, the planchet spreads out a bit when it is struck, making the coin both larger diameter, and causing a stretching out of the words as you see here.

robuddo: your '08s is struck through Gold! Here's a 1927-S Quarter (quite a bit actually not captured in the scan); have had: '72CC Quarter with a big gold button in the reverse field, 1808 O-105 CBH with gold streaks all over the obverse, a few others. Of the '44 broadstruck: look at the R of TRUST-there's an O there and southeast of that looks like part of a U, and some other overstruck letters...  Edited by Oldgrouchyguy

Spence: a smidge over 20mm and there's a lot more original mint red than shows in the scans, and it's at least triple-struck; the bottom half of the reverse almost looks like a double-die... Removed it from the holder: the reverse rim is broken the length of the strike-through (rim Cud), and whatever it was, was much harder than the bronze of the cent, as it polished where it hit., and left an extended lip of metal at the edge, which is thinned. The cent probably couldn't normally eject from the striking chamber, thus the multi-strikes both sides Edited by Oldgrouchyguy
