how do you store your capped busts? folder, album or air tites? I have one,1817, and bidding on 3 others. Since they are 2mm larger then modern half dollars they don`t fit in modern half dollar air tites or folders

I only have one (not counting the reeded edge type) and it is in my 7070, so the hole was already bigger to allow it.

@jacrispies Thanks for an informative, and concise description of the Bust Half Dollar varieties. A large part of my collection is Large Cents and Bust Half Dollars. I find Bust Half Dollars easy to attribute given good resources. I have a copy of Donald Parsley's Book. I also have a copy of Bust Half Fever by Souders. I love die cracks and Bust Half Dollars have so many of these. Here's one of my favorites - not valuable, but awesome. In the past I broke out slabbed coins but now I've reversed that because of my age. I don't have anyone in my family who appreciates coins so in the past few years I've had all of them graded. At some point I may have to sell these ladies.

@cipster That is a VERY nice 1811 O-112a! The die crack from the cap to the edge is just visible to meet the R-5 late die state. I'm still looking for one for my set, they are very tough in choice XF+. I'd love to see more of your halves! I'll share a crackly one too:

Thank you so much for this informative post! I am just starting to enjoy the beauty of these coins. My primary interest has been early date coppers and pre-federals. Oldgrouchyguy gave me a website address for Overton number identification and I tried to use it to id my 2 examples but to no avail. Wizard coin supply states that the Peterson book is easier to use. Thoughts welcomed. (It blows my mind how much I've spent on books)

I don't know which site he gave you to work with, but I usually use this one before going to my books. http://maibockaddict.com. I guess I find it more convenient than digging out my books and has an easier way to nail the die marriages down using the T-I alignments like jacrispies mentions in the original post.

I too am quite fond of this series. Thanks for a superb guide into deeper digging and appreciating. This is my best example; never slabbed nor attributed. same coin; different lighting:

wow, very informative. seems just as tedious as trying to attribute morgan VAMs. this is a series i'd love to get into if I weren't in the poorhouse. I have 2 capped bust halves: 1812 w/rotated die & 1823, ugly 3 variety. I love them both. thanks for posting this info.
