Now that is really amazing. I want one too. And I see where this is going. You buy a couple of UK coins. What's the harm, right? And before you know it, you're hooked on world coins too...

They sold sets of both the old design and new design dated 2008 last year. I purchased a base medal set of each.
Don't know if I am going to purchase a base medal set this year.
I still enjoy looking to change and finding something new.

I got the 2008 base and silver proof sets when they first came out, and was impressed with them. Good luck finding a silver set from 2008, I have never seen one for sale since they sold out at the mint.

I just checked, and ebay has many '08 base metal sets (ordinary and proof) available.

What happens when people start breaking up the sets and selling them separately? People will be looking for pieces of the shield to make it whole...sounds like fun!

Not sure who thinks the US Mint is trying to inspire people to collect coins. Actually they are in the process of doing the same as with the Stamp Collecting, ruin the entire hobby with stupid types of coins. And don't forget the proof of this is we just have to have a pile of people on our coins. No longer Liberty standing, sitting, walking, just a lot of dead people's faces. It the UK wants to make coins that are distinctive, pretty, imaginative, so let them. We have a bunch of dead presidents and their wives on ours. Yes many countries have fantastically decorative coins that are very decorative, artistic looking but we have our dead presidents on ours. That is one thing that is done here better than most places. We take a hobby and distroy it. Beanie Babies were over done. Baseball/Football cards, Hot Wheel/Match Box cars and yes US Postage stamps now slowly sinking into the sunset by massive overkill. I predict soon our coins will have all the Movie Stars, WWE wrestlers, Al Capone and your wife's cousin Gertrude on them. There is no way we well be intimidated with nice looking coins from other countries. Hasn't worked before so why now?

I don't think people will break up the sets since base metal coins can all be found in circulation. I actually like the older US coins before former presidents appeared. I do agree that various world mints have started making too many coins each year rather than a commerative coin for a special reason.

I found myself nodding in agreement with just carl's statements as I read them, although of course Congress is to fault for mandating certain types of coins. I've stated before that many current USA coins look as if they were designed by a committee rather than an artist and that when we have to go to past designs (most notably the standing Liberty half-dollar) for current, perhaps it's time to find new artists. That statement was a little too inclusive, perhaps, as both the Sacagawea dollar obverse and reverse designs are beautiful (how can you go wrong with kids and eagles?), and there have been other recent pleasing designs. However, some of the State Quarters have been ... um ... odd, and frankly, the presidential series' designs are obviously political and less than pleasing with their frontal-face designs. Oh, and just carl - I can think of a few stars who would serve well as new models for Lady Liberty designs. I can see it now ... in a filmy costume, JLo strides away across a sunset landscape, looking provocatively over her shoulder with Angelina's head on her shoulders. Can you feel it?

At my local post office there is a sign saying that you can order stamps with your own face on them. I wonder what they would say if someone wanted their dog, cat, parrot, etc on a stamp?

For our cards this past Christmas, we had stamps made using a nice shot of my son!

Your own face on a stamp! I wonder how the Queen would feel about that?
I would love if we could do that, side profile, make it look as close to the normal British stamps as possible so that you only notice if you look closely. hee hee!
