Recently, I started getting into Morgans, and I bid $500 on the Million Dollar Mogan set. Luckily, I did some research and found you can buy them new for the low price of only $49.99 new. My money was refunded by ebay a few days later. This copy set phenomenon is incredibly annoying and should be illegal imo. After that experience, I stopped buying sets. Live and learn haha

Turning my attention to "braided" cents, not sure what braided means, but will find out.

@pigeonman333rd - when I said copy I meant example or version rather than fake. sorry for the confusion. I also try to be vigilant against fakes. they are getting quite good these days.

@shtiv - braided hair cents are the large size (like a half dollar) one cent coins minted from 1839-1857. there are 2 sub varieties the petite head and the mature head. there are a lot of minor varieties and overdates and such. 1857 is the key date and will run $200+ or so for a decent circulated example. most of the dates can be found in respectable condition in the 20-50 range, culls 4-5 and nice lustrous au kinda coins for 150-200 or so.

braided is the word for the head style. I have no idea why we chose that word. liberty is wearing her hair in a bun, not braids...

here is a link to the grellman book. it is the most in depth technical book on the subject. its not a page turner but it is an amazing reference for identifying the various coins from that series. https://nnp.wustl.edu/library/book/586931

if you run into questions about large cents feel free to message me. I dont always know the answer but I probably know who would.

Hondo Boguss nailed it.

This is the same question with different wording from OP's other thread.

OP is asking for investment advice.

I think long term, you can't do better than buying Large US Notes. There just aren't many around.

The other item is a 2019 S -ERP, if you can find one for the initial release price jump on it..

Pigeonman333rd, that 1852 large cent is simply beautiful. I never see them in that condition for selling. Just an outstanding coin in my books.

There are few people who get as excited about coins and precious metals as I do. In response to your assumption, I feel it is in my best interest to purchase things that may appreciate more than others. While I am not an expert in the field of coins, I do enjoy it. I loved it as a kid and have been getting back into it heavily. Yes, I occasionally sell coins or barter. Currently, I am mostly a buy-and-hold hobbist/investor. If I die, I wouldn't mind leaving my son some good investments I made, but what he does with them I don't know.

Just so you know SaturnD51 I got that 1852 from the Grellman collection originally auctioned off in 1989. That's the same name as the Author advertised by Carrscoin's link. It came with an Arbitration Certificate.

I'm only buying because the credit union said I haven't spent money in over a year and they were threatening to suspend my credit card. I love collecting beautiful peace's of money and saving money I work two jobs but I live in Oregon. If your frugal and go to free food days at the mall's and Churches you don't need to spend money. I have two banks one for spending and coin roll hunting one for saving money. I got another Large cent Arbitrated by Robert E Mathews.I am currently bidding on an 1847 arbitrated by Delafield and Newman who ever they are I just shoot for the stars even though stars don't count in the Grading Standard I like them. Thanks for the Book Carrscoins!

If your looking for investment advice it's the Governments TSP use the G Fund put in 35% of your pay for 22 years and when you retire your a millionaire. If you want coins to invest in it's the 1856 Flying Eagle cent circulation strikes. Most are in private collections and they are made of cooper nickel and are less costly then those ugly Proofs. To get a grasp of how many were really made after 1856 get yourself a copy of the 1944 numismatist. The brass ones are fake made for collectors the copper ones are fake made in China. Their was one Bronze 1856 Flying Eagle cent owned by Longacre the mint probably still has that. Their were 50 Half Cents issued to congress of the same design. They struck many fakes under Snowden to support collectors like 1804 dollars and 1823 large cents. Edward Cogan started distribution of the fakes he offered one in copper for four dollars one in nickel for one dollar and one in copper nickel for two dollars. There was one 1856 cent struck in metal resembling silver the most beautiful piece one of a kind. The copper thick planchets had the highest mintage. Two thin cent weak strikes were produced of pure copper. Snowden had Joesph Warton a minor and metallurgist create different alloys all to make 1856 cents so only the cooper nickel ones are considered real their were 2000 proofs and they are all ugly and 1000 circulation strikes. The problem with the proofs is they are indistinguishable from the restrikes of 1858. I search the world over for 1856 cents but I've never been able to afford a real 1856 Flying Eagle cent but I want a nice white circulation strike not a Proof they are made of more copper then nickel. Proofs are brown cents but circulation strikes are white cents they look frosty. NGC registers all 1856 Flying Eagle cents as proofs regardless of what the certified case says.

Large size notes are a bucket list item for me. Even a 1923 $1 SC would be nice.

When it comes to Notes I Like the Black eagles those bills are nice. My sister once gave me a few Gold certificates but some one broke into are old house in Vermont and stole them. I Bless them because of all things that shocked me is they stole food so you can bet they were stealing for life or death hunger. Not easy living in the East Coast to expensive It took all are family income and we maxed out our credit cards just to survive. I Love Oregon I find indian heads more often in change then in Vermont. I think the next big coin to sell for higher prices will be the 1982 bronze small date because of not everybody being able to find a 1982-D bronze small date it's the next best thing. I heard the small dates were only minted in the month of January of that year but that's one twelfth the of the over all mintage for Philadelphia so that's still a high mintage but not many are in the change I search. I feel the 1931-s is climbing in price but I'm routing for my 2009 P/D copper satin cents because they have gone up in price from .36 cents a piece to $11 dollars a piece modern day. Lets not forget my 1998,1999, and 2000 Wide AM cents those are fun to find in change or buy by the roll. Best deal I got on those 2000 Wide AM cents was .50 cents a piece to buy a whole roll of ms 60+ coins. Their worth about 5-6 dollars a piece now. Probably 100 dollars 20 years from now never certify those because it hurts the population they are only rare if you save them all and let the registry stagnate. I only own 1 set of all three found in change two or three 1998's and alot of 2000's.What about the 1907/1908 In God We Trust Motto st gaudens Double Eagle now that's a coin worth Saving. I still think theirs 1944 steel cents out in change because I have found 1943-s steel cents here in Oregon. What about the 1877 Indian head proof those went from 5,500 a piece to a whopping $8,800 since their release a few years back. All the new proof cents from San Francisco are more rare every year and rolls are outrageous. I invested in rolls of 2014-s but the mintage went up for those in 2015 so they are only worth what I paid for them. The 1950-1954 proof cents are rare but condition has to be best you can find. 1909vdb cents are way higher in cost then the Red Book so they are worth keeping but high mintage. 1893-s and 1894 p Morgan silver dollars are in need in every ones collection first and for most then the Carson Cities then the rest. I still need to find a 1983 bronze cent P/D and a 1982-D bronze small Date before I can really call myself a collector I'm a Hoarder at best.

You got a nice Proof coin as your profile image Kenwright396! The only seated Liberty I own I paid about $28.00 for oop's 27.02 I just checked and it was said to have been given to the original owner in change from Subway in Chicago. Its a 1853 Seated Liberty quarter like yours but not as nice. I don't really know much about quarters but this one I like because its got a nice eagle on it. My guess is it's an f12 but yours looks like a proof how did you get it?
