i second getting a professional opinion. it might also behoove you to either do more research or hire an intermediary to help with authentication when buying coins like this. the cost of having a experienced third party verify the authenticity is a small percentage of this coins potential value. you wouldn't buy a car without having it checked by your mechanic or a house without an inspection. this is no different.

there are 4 accepted slabbing companies in the usa. ICG, ANACS, NGC and PCGS. anybody else is just making fancy holders in their basement. that "slab" is the same thing as a cardboard flip in terms of buyer protection and market acceptance.

The good news....All of the diagnostics look good, however it looks like a proof, not an MS striking. There was only 1 die pair that should be considered MS and that is the Snow-3. There appears to be the die chip around the top part of N in Cent, which likely makes this the S-9, the most common variety of the date seen.

Now....the bad news. This coin has been heavily cleaned from the images. In addition to the cleaning, there appears to be either strike throughs or damage on the reverse. Both of these factors GREATLY reduce the value of this coin.

I think you can do a lot better than this for $14K. I would return it for all the reasons listed above and search more reputable sites for better value.

RedRaider calls it - this is clearly cleaned, and while I believe it's genuine, I would never have paid $14K for a damaged coin.

NGC considers all 1856 FEs to be proof - just a minor point in relation to RedRaider's post.

While true that TPGs only grade 1856 FECs as proof, the S-3 variety is widely considered to be the MS striking of the coins. They were the initial batch struck to give out to congress and other dignitaries.

PCGS used to grade the S3s as MS and if you have an old holder with on designated as MS, you can revolver and retain the designation. If you crack it out and submit raw, it will be graded as a proof.

Looks good to me. Too bad it's been cleaned. I don't know how much monetary difference a Details grade would be.

$14k seems high for a basement slab -- no premium over that of a raw coin. If it were me, I'd return it.
