Did you do the magnet test? Did you do the tissue test? John1

Exact weight and comparative ping tone test against a known genuine silver Dollar should prove, either way.

In this case.... You don't need the edge. You don't need the weight. You don't need the MM position. You don't need the ping test. You don't need the magnet test. You don't need to examine LIBERTY. 100% of genuine 1893-S Morgan dollars were struck from one obverse die. That die had the date in a specific position, your coin's date in not in that position. Therefore, that is the ONLY test needed to conclusively declare that your coin is a counterfeit. Genuine date position:

Congratulations to those who guessed it was fake. Several retakes were required, but the dealer checked the metal content and found that it was not silver.

As responders to this thread, we can't check the metal. All we can really do is make comments after looking at the pictures and reading the posts. That is why I suggested a comparative ping tone test - easy to do, and costs nothing.

Examine the Milling, as you will see it like that on many Counterfeit coins of such ilk nss-52: if you cannot remember the placement of the date, looking for the Spike or checking the milling is a very quick way to determine genuineness

Quote: comparative ping tone test I wish you would stop recommending this. Encouraging novices to bang two coins together while balancing one on a bare finger is a distinctly bad idea.

Method of ping tone test: Place a blanket under the test area. Place one coin on the tip of a finger and gently tap the edge with the other coin. If the suspect coin falls on the blanket, no damage is done.
Have been doing this test for many decades. With a little practice, it is a reliable diagnostic, and anyone can do it reliably.

Ping test is junk science with modern Chinesium forgeries that are of comparable silver content and alloy to the real thing.
When buying a multi-thousand-dollar coin, I want something more reliable than my ear.
I knew this one was junk as soon as I saw the date. Didn't even need to read the rest.
The best "test" you can do is to learn what real ones look like and how to recognize them.
I would avoid this dealer like the plague and never return. There's no way any dealer would allow such a high value date/MM to be in inventory when it's such an obvious fake, unless they're straight up scammers, thieves, or con artists.

The ping test may be fine for assessing junk silver, but it's totally unwarranted here. As @nss-52 and @paralyse noted, just seeing the incorrect date position is enough to confirm that it's not genuine. Testing the metal content is also superfluous, but at least you know it has no bullion value either.

Ping test , tissue test , in this day and age , junk science and pure nonsense! As stated this piece is spurious due to the date position being impossible for an 1893 S. Send it back or send it in ( To a legit TPG) No Santa Claus in numismatics .
