Oh boy  , this coin (better date because of condition) is as far from choice brilliant uncirculated gem as you can get. To get that grade on the Sheldon grading scale would match with a MS-65 or higher, meaning no wear, and very minimal contact marks... Oh yeah, the value would be as much as an average home price of several hundred thousand... Extreme condition rarity at these grades...  PCGS coinfacts lists a gem MS-65 at a whopping $325,000! AU-55 seems about right. At least the photos are decent enough to grade from. With a raw coin, you need to ignore the description and assess the coin on your own.

I agree with AU55 at best, and a significant scratch on the Reverse which detracts from the overall eye appeal.

You need to realize this ... There is NO Santa Claus in Numismatics! You are trying to hit home runs ..ain't gonna happen . If this was a true BU ( Mint State ) 1901 no punter is going to list it for sale unless Certified ! As stated True mint state 1901 (P) Phillies sell for huge money . The pictured coin is AU , looks like a slight obverse cleaning . Max retail depending on in hand 250 to 350 USD . Stop buying coins on ebay until you enhance your Numismatic Education ! |

I don't mind a home run, but what is beginning to bug me is how sellers title their listings and misrepresent their items. I honestly knew nothing more about this coin other than it's not a common coin and pretty much only try and buy BU or higher coins. Very rare that I buy anything under MS63 now a days.

The seller knows a low MS coin is in the $4000 range, so you have to ask yourself a lot of questions. For a coin like this assume that it was submitted and got Details, then cracked out. The seller is hoping to get a problem-free AU58 price out of it, so that tells you something. The images are good, so if you like the coin for what it is, make an educated offer and stick to it. Don't engage in a lot of back and forth dialogue with the seller.

Thanks, KPP! I feel like I'm getting help asking out a girl haha. I have purchased several coins from this seller, but I am hesitant to take the risk on this one. I'll keep the group informed if I have her through this in with the others I purchased.

no way CH BU. that itself eliminates this seller. second I'm betting this coin was slabbed and it didnt come back what they wanted to see and I'm also betting that it may have came back AU details (Cleaned)
I'm at AU55 details (cleaned) there are too many flat spots on this coin on both sides where the original surfaces are gone and just a little too much light glare in the photos to hide it.
i would never touch a high end 1901 without being slabbed and I dont believe in slabbing coins but when you are talking in $1000's for a coin thats a little hefty to make an educated guess on
