i think it would be more constructive to talk about how much you would have to spend to get a problem free example with similar wear. there are several pretty decent ones on ebay around $60. that means a patient buyer could probably pick one up for $45 or so. is the discount worth the damage? its impossible to know that without knowing what this coin is priced at and the OPs budget. maybe OP is a mason and finds the graffiti attractive for that reason. its a bad buy at $100 but what about $40? $30? $20? I will buy as many as I can afford with my cash on hand at $20. silver content is what $9? I will mortgage my house to buy them at $9. the point I'm trying to make here is that there are collectors for this. they will pay a decent chunk more than its silver content. at the right price its a great piece of history. many coin collectors would be thrilled to have this in their collection. you just need to get it at the right price.

Of course you shouldn't buy it. If you want my opinion on value: $20 tops.

1836 is a date that is difficult to get in attractive condition in the middle to higher grades. Even though a small problem coin may need to be settled for, this damage is way too significant. I wouldn't pay more than $20.
I actually recognize that grafitti. I had an 1800 bust dollar with the same style A in the obverse field. Likely coincidence.

Agree, no more than $20 and I'd rather you pass altogether. Easy to buy, tough to sell.

I'd not be interested in this coin - just my opinion of course.1836 is not an expensive coin and I'd look for a problem free coin.

No I was saying that the buy included that plus 40 additional coins for a total of $50- Which the other coins alone were worth.
BUT the buy didn't happen.

Not sure how to get alerts, I just check back into the forum every day. I know you can subscribe to a topic but I don't know if it will send you an email notification.
