AU58 looks like it might have just gotten away with a straight grade.

AU Details (cleaned) But that is an absolutely beautiful coin, Jaobler. From the first year the New Orleans mint produce half dollars. If you're tired of having it around, just mail it to me and I'll give it a good home.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

Here are some additional photos which were taken about 7 years ago. The coin color is more accurately shown in the first pair of photos. My original purchase was in 2002.

I don't see any signs of cleaning in either set of photos, and I'm less convinced there is actual wear with the second set of pictures. There are some light scratches on the slab showing up, but there are also some hairlines in the fields. Based on the new photos, it might be a straight graded MS-62.

Ms60 lots of hairline scratches but uncirculated details so I'll go with 60 or 62 if it's straight graded. Nice coin

I won this coin in a Heritage auction in 2002. As I recall there was another example in the same grade which was moderately toned. At the time I was attracted by the bright silver color and sharp detail of the coin I won and was pleased that the price was a lot less than that for the toned example. In retrospect, I think that piece had more original surfaces and was in fact the better coin. I agree with several posters that my coin had been cleaned. Apparently NGC found it "market acceptable" at the time and gave it a pass. I rather doubt it would grade problem-free now if I were to crack it and resubmit. I still like the coin but if I were shopping for an 1839-O half now I'd be holding out for one with a more original look.
