This it is a proof coins guys. This coin was strike twice and the borders inside the coin show. Also the design show proof coin. The letters show the second strike. I know is hard to see and be familiar with.
If necessary and request I can show here an example in MS64, in fact was in one of my older posts. or see the post: TOPIC_ID=415576

The differences? The proof coins are struck twice. These retired dies are only struck once. So it is a keeper with the year variety of a type 'B' reverse business strike coin.  |

One of the trick here it is the Observe and not the Reverse. The Reverse die it is Type B. The Observe it is Proof Die. Compare the no 9 and 5 between the proof and the normal strike. Thanks to COOP to show pictures.

The reverse die is the Type 'B' on the Business strike coins. these can be found on the 1956-1964 quarters. But again the strike is much stronger on the proof coins as they are struck twice. Business strikes are only struck once. When look at the detail differences, then you can see this on the image I posted. (Proofs have a stronger strike) It not the die that causes the strength, it is the extra strike. Some gold coin are struck many times to enhance the detail on them.

The close-up show the 956 as the business strike. Take a shot to certify. Me for RDV's I use ANACS because they recognize all. How much will give hard to say, but IMHO at least 64 for this coin.
COOP focus on the strength of the strike, me I say was two different Observe varieties, one for normal strength and one for proof. Compare the 956 and you will see the difference. Are also others but harder to see.

COOP you are correct on your statement. But if you look close to 956 you will see it is not same. Inners circles on 9 and 6 normal strike are different then proof. The 5 is also different and those differences do not can come from one strike or two.

I decided to go through my quarter dansco album to see if I had any type b reverse in there that I did not know about, or forgot about. I found this 1957, I know it is not as rare as the 1956, but still a good find. I decided to pull it from the album and put it in a close-fit holder. I just wanted to share.   |

Type B 1957 seem to be 64 to 65. Do you see the 9 and the 5?!!!! Hope.

PS to previous answer: To understand the Type B. Was use in the end of the production, which in general go to the reserve and not in circulation. Some go out and majority NO. For Type B is estimate that about 5 to 10 K go out. 1956 used only one Die and is hard to find. 1957 3 Dies. Why the prices are different?, because are most drive by PCGS on no bases.
No Type B was produce with more then 3 recycle Dies, and all has re-engraved.
Is sad for me to see the lovers of coins are so Ignorants at the facts of just of the prices. No Type B 1956 to 1964 are know to be more then 1100 pieces but PCGS give 20$ and for a 1 cent who are know 20K 1500$. Try to understand this.
Hope you can collect all the series, is hard but Good Luck. 56,61 and 63 the most rarest.

Thanks for that info! I might take on the task of trying to put a set of these together, it sounds like fun! I have been looking for that 1964 D Washington quarter, with the type C reverse. |

Good luck for 1964-D Type C because it is very scarce. Apparently only 57000 was struck and probably many was melt already. Only 676 know and only 121 in MS.
Also look for 1969-D Type D. I have the only one certified for the moment but some most be around. Only 5K was struck.

For 1964-D it is one of the easy to spot. The year and if the N in UNUM is sheriff then you has, I will post tomorrow one new acquisition combinate with RPM and DDR. |
