Go for it. I'm interested to see your "after" pics.

Ondiwave, work that thing over! But please take pics to document your treatments. Why not have fun with it? It will probably still be worth 5 ˘ when you're done, and we love seeing progression pics.

Looks like a once buried coin or maybe a fountain coin. Have some fun trying to clean it.

Whatever you do can't make it worth less than 5 cents - go for it.

When I find coins I cannot see I simply hold them under running, hot tap water and finger rub them. If you can't read it, you have nothing to lose.

It would be fun to take "before and after" pics of several such coins that have been subjected to youtube coin cleaning suggestions.

I left it soaking in the oven cleaner- will update when I get home. Interesting note- No pink color came off on towel BUT it appears less pink now!

Ok Soooo really interesting. I left it wrapped with oven cleaner on. It looked great when I got home. there was a little "gunk" left so I thought- i'll wash it with dish soap. I left it to soak and this us what happened!!!

Interesting results.

I suppose the "success" with oven cleaner gives some credibility to the idea that the nickel was cooked at some point.
