CONGRATULATIONS MYCROB, email me your address and you will have one silver bullion round heading your way this week. Sorry the price of silver is in a nose dive, but isn't that the way of "money!" I figured today's clues would bring an answer. I actually had my first experience with a Vigener Cipher doing GEOCACHING. Some Geocachers would list their caches in a Vigenere Cipher and you had to figure it out so you could find it. Here is the last one I did: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cach...e69e5b75e739Although I live in Colorado, my uncle lives in Oregon and asked me to figure this one out for him. The hard part of that one was using a space as one of the characters and not knowing the keyword, but I finally figured it out, the keyword was "vigenere", LOL. One way to start figuring my cipher out was that the first word and last word were the same. Therefore, the first letter of both words would be on the SAME row, the second letters would be on the same row, etc... Then you can start assembling the cipher box. I will do another one for my 500th post, but it will not be a vigenere cipher, it will be another type. I hope everyone had fun! I sure had fun doing it, it took me 4 hours just to put it together.

Explain that again about the first letters being on the same row etc?
Since the first word was N!CDA this was under ZEPHY columns but I had MDMAQ under YRZEP columns giving you the same word?
How do you use rows?
I also still am not sure how the numbers and symbols work, they still don't work in my table? Doesn't sound like they worked in mycrobs either?
So now it is over what order after A - Z did you have the numbers and symbols in?
This was a lot of fun! I look forward to the next one.

Let me see if I can explain this.
Using an Excel Spreadsheet, enter A,B,C...Z,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,0,!,@,#,etc...across the top. 26 letters, 10 numbers, 10 symbols with the symbols following the same order as numbers. This is an assumption but a wise one to start with. Each letter, number and symbol will be in it's own cell in Excel. You will have 46 cells filled up. The first row of the actual cipher is the same as the first row. The only tricky part, other than the keyword, is which way does the second row shift, left or right, one, two or more spaces. Like this: A B C D B C D E C D E F
or
A B C D ) A B C ( ) A B
I used the second example. Some will go like this: A B C D D E F G G H I J But I thought that would be too difficult, so I just did a single rotation. But I did do it the opposite of the Wikipedia example, which shifted left, I shifted right.
Next, the DOWN letters, which are the actual letters to the clue go down alphabetically but you don't need the symbols since all symbols represent a letter. Like this: A B C D E etc...
Since we know that the first word and the last word are the same, then the letter "M" and "N" must be in the same ROW to represent the same letter on the left. We now know it is M but before we knew that, we just knew they were in the same row. The second symbol "!" and "D" will also be in the same row. The same for the next three symbols. Without the keyword, it would still be extremely difficult to solve, but you would have some idea of how to configure the cipher box.
If anyone would be interested in seeing the actual cipher box I made in Excel, just let me know and I will email it to you.

I did the exact same thing except not being used to this I put A to Z along the top and A to ) down the side. I don't think that should make a difference though.
Don't M and N both appear on every row? And in your cipher I had the letter N for Money on the Z row while the letter M for Money on the Y row, so they are not on the same row?
I'm still not getting it am I! I'll PM you my email so you can send your grid, maybe that will make it clearer for me.
Sorry to be a pain I am intrigued now.

Nice job mycrob... I was on my way ...I had the key word but hadn't figured out the order of the symbols and numbers in the cypher... I must admit that the Mercury part def made me scratch my head! Thanks so much MtnCoinMan this was a fun and challenging contest, my favorite one yet! I learned a lot about ciphers and codes so I feel like a winner too! Just not a silver winner

Actually, he won a silver coin with some kind of picture of Lady Liberty with a draped bust and the year 1804 on it.
I am already planning my 500 post cipher, it will be even more fun, I hope.
