I'm at AU58, nice coin. I totally agree with IGE, almost all gold coins are worth certification and slabbing. With all the fakes out there it makes things much easier for re-sale, if/when you decide.

I'll have to pop her out of the Air Tite. I have a Microscope on order and hope that it will be here any day. I hope that will help with my photography. I never have been very good at it. Your photos are pretty decent for grading. Maybe just remove the coin from the holder to eliminate any marks on the holder.

Assuming the marks are on the holder I'd say AU 55 but gold often surprises me and yes, I would have it slabbed. I plan on doing the same with mine.

I think it is AU-55. I would not send it in to get graded. You are looking at $40 fee + $10 application fee and postage both ways for what is a very nice AU gold coin. I just sent coins to PCGS for the first time since the early 90s and it is just plain expensive. Spend the money on more coins or a book if you are concerned that it is counterfeit. I know I am in the minority here about sending everything off to get graded.

i disagree with the people who are recommending having a circulated common date $5 gold slabbed. it will be a net negative when you go to sell. they sell for the same amount raw as they do slabbed. this is functionally a bullion coin with a small assayers premium. the people collecting $5 gold coins by date and mintmark will mostly want an 1880 in much better condition.

you have a decent point Carrs, It matters your reasoning for wanting it slabbed I guess. If you are doing it because you think it will add a premium to the price when you go to sell it, they yes, sending it off as a one off coin will not be profitable. Personally for me, my reasons are a bit different, I shouldn't assume everyone is doing it for the same one. So to add to profits - no need to slab, any other personal reason, then its worthy enough in my opinion.

Thanks all! I'm not a big "slab" person. This gal will just remain nice and happy in her Air-Tite. I have no questions about her authenticity.
I have a few St. Gaudens that I may submit but, that's about all. I appreciate your comments!

A slab lends a certain presence to a coin. If the money is not a stretch, then go ahead.

Thanks CarrsCoins! I appreciate your comments. Hubby is starting to talk about getting some of our coins graded. I think it's because we got a 15% discount thru NGC. He's a coupon clipper!
I like profit as do a lot of collectors. That said, this will go into our collection with all of our coins for our Beneficiary. She is a minor collector herself and feels honored that we plan on gifting them all to her...someday!
