An 1881 Adelaide Industrial Exhibition medallion. .925 Silver 3/4" dia. with the entire Lords Prayer on the obverse. Sadly it was pretty toasted. Detected in 3 inches of hard clay under an outdoor sand volleyball court at the local high school.
The Ox moves slowly, but the Earth is patient.

I found an 1860 British penny in change in England in late 1970 or early 1971, just before decimal currency was introduced. Post-decimalisation my oldest find was a 1912 shilling in 1977. Theoretically now the oldest coins that can be found in circulation in the UK are 1971 1p and 2p pieces, which I find on an almost weekly basis, but I did find a 1944 farthing (slightly smaller than a 1p) in a £1 bag of pennies last year. The oldest US coin I've had in change on numerous visits to the States is a 1942-D Wheat penny, but I had a 1939 nickel once in change in Panama! Elsewhere the oldest coin I remember getting in change was an 1897 20-rappen piece in Switzerland in 1981. My oldest identifiable detector find was a fourth-century AD barbarous radiate.

I've never found anything that old on my trips to the US - but everytime I go I take a handful of old stuff to spend :)

The oldest thing I've found was this 1885 Victorian shilling whilst noodling 10 cent coins.
