thanks for all the great info pyrbob does the book list how many notes were made from this bank? I found a website that had this info, but for some reason it did not have marion, virginia. I have come across Marion, Indiana and Marion, Ohio notes on the net, but none from Virginia. Daviscfad more than likely going to get the bill, I will post my own pics when I get it. How do you protect paper money? Do they make something similar to airtites for coins that are for paper money?

The census CD that goes with the 5th edition lists six $20 type 1 notes for this bank. They range in grade from VG to F-VF and serial numbers range from 22 to 759. The 6th edition with an updated census is out but I haven't purchased it yet.

Thanks for the info pyrbob. Does that mean that there have only been 6 of these notes reported from this bank? Is that a common occurence with these national currency notes, or is that a low number? How are the prices on the lower graded bills?

From the notes I have looked at in the past, 6 of a certain type of a certain denomination is average to high. Also, keep in mind this census is several years old and has been updated. The values given in the book are for fine and the book says to add or subtract 25 percent for each change in grade.

Thanks again pyrbob for the great info. Is there any way you could estimate a grade from the pics? Well I got the note. This will be my first note. I will try and take better pics when I get it.

The photo makes it a little hard to grade. I don't see any writing on the note (pen or pencil) and I don't see any tears. I do see what appears to be three vertical folds and one horizontal fold. It also looks like the note is a little dirty or has a slight stain on the right side. If there are no tears or writing then I would say VG-F. But I have only been collecting paper money for 3 years now so let's see what others say about the grade.

VG-F would be about right. The folds are stained and not that straight...

I read there was a banking panic in 1933...President Roosevelt ordered the nations 18,000 banks closed in March for a "Bank Holiday" so lots of bills were infused into the economy...

I would say VG. Ol' Hickory's nose is a bit worn, and so is the center area on the back side. There's I count 4 different main fold areas, but each fold has many other folds (they're not the same fold, just the same area.) And is that a tear on the reverse before "twenty?"

WD thanks for the comments. It's not a tear, it is just another fold.
