 AU50 does seem a bit low. Still has some low luster and pretty clear definition. If I'm reading PCGS correctly, they consider it as a BN+. It's holding it's value nicely. Edited by dsking

According to PCGS grading guidelines, the following defines the Red designation for a copper coin: PCGS designated Red (RD) for copper coins that grade MS60 or better and show 95% or more of their original mint-red color. This coin is graded AU50 so not mint state. Red refers to the hue of fresh copper, as it would appear just after the coin is struck. Because of copper's propensity to darken over the years, only very small fractions of old copper coins are found with coloration that would numismatically be deemed Red. PCGS Director of Education Mike Sherman explained for grading that a full red copper coin will display 95% or more of its original color, while red & brown will display anywhere between 5% and 95% of its original red color which should help in self grading some of them. Brown (BN) (Less than 5% of original red color visible). Grading is always a challlenge, thats why CAC was able to come into the market, as well as you see all the crackouts, plus different grading services may vary in their graders and grading. I guess PCGS is considered more accurate to some as when a coin is in a PCGS holder and is a higher end coin it tends to have higher resale value over others like NGC. Edited by datadragon

Thanks all. Seems like consensus is maybe AU53 which is what I was leaning towards. My photos weren't the best but in hand it seems right around there. I bought it off of Craigslist from a local guy a few years back and first time I'd ever done that. Good memories standing in a bank parking lot talking about this S VDB with him and paid a fair price for it...didn't even need to haggle.

Your second set of close-up images lead me to think AU50 is a fair grade. Maybe 53 on a better day but as BadThad noted, it could land in a 45 holder with grouchy, Monday morning graders.

obverse is weaker but I think its better than 50
I'm at AU53. they may have knocked it due to the obverse
