I try to buy only what I can aford with out paying payments but I haven't done too good of job on that!

I just managed a buy it now..presale of 1 proof buffalo for $4.79 plus 1.60 shiipping so $6.39, thats about 1/2 of what they are selling for. I emailed him to see if he would make a deal on a few more... I would like to have 5 or 10..  |

operating within a budget is something we all do, its just that some budgets are bigger than others, When I find a coin that goes beyond my budget its saturday overtime until I can afford it, its no lunches its no movies its no its no its no if you know what I mean,,
But I agree with Dan if you cant afford it then there is no question dont do it.

By the way Grovey,, I know that proofs are cool to look at but for P+D Rolls from the mint it is 8.95 + shipping I think it comes to around 13.00, 80 coins for the price of 2 and I think in the long run those in Higher mint state will be a better return ,,, Just my opinion of course.

Hi Grovey, Guess it is good to see someone else has the fever as well! Be patient and buy the coins because your a coin collector and love the coin! If they someday go up in value---GREAT, but should they stay right where they are well you then have something that most folks don't.
As for busting proof sets up and selling them off? Yes, there is good money in it RIGHT NOW as folks are trying to get those singles to fill albums or whatever else they may be doing in the world of collecting. Everything we do every day is a gamble and my advice to you would be if you don't have the extra cash to gamble then play it safe and DON'T. Someday things will be better and then you can take that ocassional chance. Be smart and enjoy your collecting at a level you are comfortable with. Good luck.

OK, I found another auction on ebay...$8.95 for the P&d buffalo PLUS THE 2 NEW PROOFS..8.95 + 2.00 S/H =10.95. that's less than the price of the 1 buffalo proof.. has 142 sets. only .50 s/h for each additional set...I have him on my watch list..I think it's not a bad deal..any thoughts ? |

Personally I don't think that there will be a shortage of Proof Nickels. Remember that you get them in the regular proof sets and the silver proof sets. With the demand high I don't see any real shortage of proof sets production ---- no Limit..!

Now Catman, while I agree there will be plenty of proof sets available I do some limited opportunities on singles as, quite honestly, once the proof sets find collector hands the busting open will cease and they will remain intact, as a set, for years and years. That my friend, hopefully, will keep an honest demand for the proof singles and now that I am up to 35 of them I would hope you will provide encouragement to this buffalo fool? Lets not bust my bubble just yet as I want to enjoy this for a while and let time decide whether I was right or wrong!

Crystalk, I have no intention of bursting your bubble. Demand and popularity give rise to value more than scarcity. This is why a 1955 penny is worth $800.00 and a 32 BC silver dracham is worth $32.00. The more popular the buffalo the higher the price goes. The more willing a buyer is to pay a little more that than the next guy the price will go up. I say keep at it. However the biggest reason a person loses with coins is that they don't set a sell value. This is the price they say alright I will sell all these now..! If you always wait for the coin to go up you might reach the peak and then have it fall out from under you. Keep an ete open and you will do well. catman  |

I watched the 99 Statehood Quarters very closely and sold at the $55 to $65 level as I am not a roll collector. My gamble paid off as they dropped right after that. I intend to do the same with SOME of these buffalo proofs. See, my idea here, is not to make money but to keep buffalo proofs basically for free. If I must sell 20 to keep 15 and have all my money back from the initial purchases then I am a happy camper, or should I say, coin collector. While I really do buy, for the most part, for long term collecting I would be a fool to pass up ANY opportunity that presents itself in a way to put a buck back into my pocket or provide me with that extra income to buy a classic I other wise may had to pass. My intentions have never been to put the screws to any body, at any time, but to watch the old grey sheet and do something right once in a while. Sure a lot more fun than the stock market! The 2001 buffalo dollar was a huge success but I, like many others, sold to quickly but none the less my keepers were free. I don't do this often but can not pass up anything with a buffalo as the American people are nuts for the buffalo! My fun has ended as the whole world has jumped on the band wagon now and the cheapies are gone on ebay so I ordered a few from a national dealer as his price is now better than anything I could do on ebay. Looks like my herd is about complete! Now if those rolls and bags would just show up I could get back to my normal dreaming and collecting! Appreciate your advice and your post! Good to have friends one can trust and count on even if we are blinded by an ocassional release!!! |

Catman, one other point I forgot to mention would be the Sacagawea proof dollars. Boy, I thought I was doing good anywhere from $10 to $15 and then finally a sell at $35!!! Figured it could never get any better than that? Well, sold a little quickly as the 2001S, which I had around 15 from busted proof sets, now are bringing $73! Who would have ever thought! While I am very content with what I did I still can't help but think about the old saying "Someday you get the bear and somedays the bear gets you"!

I didn't relize that the sackies were going for that much. I but my proof sets and mint sets each year and never even open the pagkage the mint ships them in. I gues I better check to see what these sets are selling for uh..?

Better prepare yourself for some sticker shock on the 1999 and 2001 silver sets. Great if your selling but I am holding what we (my family) has left. Darn the luck!
