Seriously though, I keep all my valuable coins in a safe deposit box at my bank. The only coins I keep at home are the ones I plan on moving soon either here or on ebay. I have one of those dictionary safes on my bookshelf and also a CD safe in with my CD's that's hollowed out. You can't even tell. Blends in.

I will share one... and only one; (>>>edit... removed cuz it's such a good idea!) Now never mention this again, and don't tell people where you live or that you collect anything, etc. etc. I have since been renting commercial space in a large bank safe. The bank closed and "lockers" are being rented by the building owner... to businesses in the building, or whoever. Pillow case=bad idea. Thieves use them to haul off loot. In a CD=bad idea. Thieves will take all your CDs. Pockets of clothing, end tables, etc. If it can be picked up, I don't think it's a great idea. What me paranoid? The security industry is picking up in this time of recession. One other thing, if I came home to a house in flames... I would go into despair. Any coins you might have can be replaced and if properly stored would survive a fire and if not, still be worth bullion. So much more would be at stake that you can't squirrel away... cuz that ain't living.

You could label the box, cotton balls, and then have it full of cotton balls with the gold on the bottom.

It should be safe down at your bank in a Safety Deposit Box !!......then you don't need to worry about the "label" or security of your GOLD coins !!..... Protecting something like "gold" with something like a "label"....is not something I'd put a lot of trust in !>.....

The best deterant from theft for coins is to keep your mouth shut about them. And I mean to everyone. You tell a relative that tells another relative that tells a neighbor that tells a friend that sends an email to their friends in prison. Or you tell your insurance agent who is only a temporary person that is now being layed off and has no income so him and all the rest of the layed off insurance people get together and stop by for some Gold. You could put an add in the local newspaper saying you have a house full of Gold coins and anyone that has an idea of how to protect them, let me know and here is my address. The less people think you have worth stealing, the better off you are. And as already noted to the limit, get a safe deposit box. Of course if you do, make sure my name is on the registration slip in case.

As an aside, it might actually be a good idea to put them on your insurance policy if you keep them in your house. Just in case.

In the good old days this would probably have been a good idea. With things the way they are today and all your personal information in the insurance company's computer, not to smart today. Such computers are available to just to many personal in that company. Have you ever gone to an insurance agent with a question about a policy? I have and with just your name they bring up so much stuff on the monitor I feel like my life is an open book. Everything I ever put down on my home owners policy was right there for this person to see. And she was just a receptionist. If she can do that, anyone in the company can do that. If you list Gold or coins, they are right there for the entire company to see.

I'd go with "Place Label Here". Or Grandma's Urine and stool samples.

Perhaps you are right just_carl, however, if you do not list them and they are stolen or you have a fire, good luck getting any insurance money for them.

Homeowner's insurance is all but worthless for coins anyway- some companies will not cover them at all, others treat them as face value cash or impose ridiculously low value coverage limits, and with the rest you might be lucky to get 50 cents on the dollar insurance recovery. There are companies that specialize in collectibles insurance and those generally tend to be the best insurers. ANA members have very reasonable group rate insurance available through Hugh Wood Inc.

I quoted this due to how true it all is.
