This is just how the US does hoards. Thoughts on whether anyone would slab some of them with a " Walmart Hoard" designation?

You guys are too funny. I was going to post this and someone beat me to the punch. The helicopter (media) were hovering for quite a while. I was wondering what was up, then I saw the news. I'm sure others got sticky fingers out there today seeing a sea of silver on the ground lol. Some stores with coin machine's don't care and others have shut theirs down. But they'll probably go-to adjacent states to cash in or take to the scrap yards out here who are shady. Any fool can tell its a inside job or some one at mint and knows the driver...they find the connection. Ironically, I just got all brand new 2023 P from the supermarket in the early afternoon and they were all brand spanking new, they shined like a diamond. I asked the young man at the service counter if he gets anymore please hold them for me. Ugh
I'm middle-aged and been around like most I'm sure, and from what I did for a living; this is a first for me ever hearing of such a theft. It had to have taken time too to unload and load all those dimes. Whats the weight for goodness sakes? Why not take the darn trailer people are asking. Hopefully there's GPS somewhere in the boxes or bags. Can't wait for the follow up on this one. Sorry, if I hear anything like inside scoop I won't be able to post about it.

Quote: Whats the weight for goodness sakes? I'm sure someone can run exact numbers, but here is my back of the envelope calculations: Each pound of dimes is worth about $20. So, two million bucks in dimes is about one hundred thousand pounds. However I think the max load permitted for an 18 wheeler is more like 80,000 pounds.

When I first posted, the estimate was 1 million stolen - now up to 2 million. I had calculated that 1 million dimes weighs approximately 2.5 tons. As for the total weight in the trailer, $750,000 X 10 dimes per dollar X 2.268 g / dime = 17,010 kilos = 37501 pounds.

Wait, wait. Spence - revised header NOW says 2 million dimes stolen, or $200,000 face value. Not two million bucks.

I think they now calculated that only approx. $750,000.00 was taken lol. When it first came over on radio it was 6 million. Maybe they misspoke, who knows it's Philly lol.
I'd hate to be the person that had to pick up what was left on ground. I take it it will get counted lololo

Even a quarter of that weight in a average vehicle they weren't going fast. I'm sure every camera everywhere is being checked. It like a movie how they determined what truck was carrying the gold by the tire compression to use as an example lol.

The police should contact Coinstar and see if any of their machines start taking in an unusual amount of dimes.

Anyone else reading this story reminded of the scene in "Blazing Saddles" where the late Slim Pickens and his pack of outlaws are thwarted by a toll booth. . .
