There is a very rare Bicentennial Ike dollar with no mintmark. 1976 Proof with No "S". Just saying, if this coin is silver.....have to know the weight. |

What you have here is a business strike bicentennial Type 2 (yes, it did not have a mint mark) struck in Philadelphia.
It is possible that it was plated, so we will need an 'accurate' weight of this coin.

I'm not sure what is up with bicentennial Ike dollar. It weighs 22.9g That I believe is to light for silver. When I first got it it looked plated but the more I examined it with my microscope the less signs of being plated there were. One thing I never remember seeing was the scratch just above the 1 in 1976. It looks like an s in a distorted way. I hope that y'all can help me figure this thing out. Thanks    |

A little too light for silver. and probably for plated as well. I too would say a clad coin. Perhaps a die chip or dent above the "1". Soooo...I agree with Dearborn!

Ok, your coin weighs 22.9g which makes it ever so slightly over weight:
These are the mint specs on this year coin:
Circulation Strike Weight:22.7 grams
40% Silver Weight:24.6 grams
So, I'll say that the extra .2 grams could be due to plating of the coin.

It looks plated to me.
And for the record, 40% silver Ikes are clad as well (Cladding: 80% Silver, 20% Copper; Core: 79% Copper, 21% Silver). They have a core. It may be more difficult to see, but it exists.
