I can't understand the grade nor how it earned a green bean. And a $18k hammer price? That same coin sold at the Heritage FUN Signature auction (Jan 2019, lot 4122) for $1560, though at that time the attribution was from the Jerald L. Martin Collection. It was in a different PCGS holder, but also graded 67+ and with a CAC sticker.

Can you say " overgraded , Boys and Girls , Sure you can! "
What an excellent example of buy the Coin not the Holder .
If this was in a 2x 2 at an LCS it might bring 5 bucks on a good day!
If any of us peons submitted might get 64 RED.

I'm glad you all seem to agree with me. Gives me a little more faith that I'm learning something!

You are indeed and it's impossible to argue that you are seeing it wrong on this coin.

If I submitted it would come back MS63 RB. Buy the coin and not the holder.

overgraded coins are never resubmitted, whereas undergraded ones are, with the result there are more overgraded coins Out There

could be the spotting appeared on the coin weeks after the grader had sneezed on it, but even without spots 67 is stretching things

It was either a mistake, which seems unlikely, or a favor. That coin does not have good enough strike to make a 67, independent of any other concerns. I have literally rolls of coins that are that good or better. I guess I'm rich! Anyone want to buy a roll of 67+ from me? Just $18k each, or I'll give you 10% off for the whole roll...$810k per roll. 10 available.

Because it was one of "the boys" who submitted it. PCGS and CAC are a farce as far as their rep goes. They are NOT the GODS of numismatics they are made out to be. They mis grade as much as anyone else. And they play favorites.

This is all simply my opinion.

Stuff like this just makes me lose all faith in those coin grading companies.

If there were a very clearly circulated (say, VF-20) coin in an MS-67+ holder, would people still pay thousands for it?

I don't know Disco, but I woukd be very surprised if there werent any shenanigans going on with these named collections when they get submitted by Heritage.

I guarantee if I bought that coin, broke it out and submitted it, I wouldn't sniff an MS67

Hordfest you are exactly right. I thought mine was better than this coin and it was only a ms67. Everyone here thought that my ms 67 coin was graded right. I looked at the coin up close. It depends on the mood of the graders at the time they see the coin. Are they grading a lot of coins from the mint at the time and they are being rushed, who knows. I just see some coins should be higher and some lower. I guess I will never understand the grading process. No human is flawless just like the graders. Like people say buy the coin, not the capsule. There are so many flaws and spots on this coin it is not fair. It even has a CAC sticker. Gess!

I just thought of something. With all the computers and today innovations and technology; why can't they make a computer to grade coins. Then there is no I am having a bad day or disputes on grades. There is technology with face recognition and a lot of things where they could do it. I will probably be dead when they have that sort of thing show up. Well just a thought. Then I couldn't complain about how coins are graded, lol. Cheers to you Hordfest for stepping forward with your post. I believe you are right.

Eye appeal and toning, apparently it made the graders happy one day or finalizer overrode the graders. Perhaps he knew the submitter?

Where's grospoison? I've been helping him with PCGS for over a year. He's an expert now at their grade manipulation.
