With those line it would never grade better then a 66 and that is not acceptable for that type of coin.

The coin is a business strike coin, not a proof. Die polish lines should not drop the grade to a 66.

But I would probably return it.

How much do you want to bet. Do you think PCGS or NGC would give this coin a 69 or 70. Maybe SEGS or some other low end grading company.

I'd bet a bag of donuts, but don't know how we'd figure out who is right. :)

But I don't see how die polish hairlines can drop the grade of a coin down to 66. At least I don't see where the standards, as published by PCGS, would allow for that.

PCGS doesn't give out many 70's, so odds would be slim even without the hairlines.

I love donuts. Your on. I see it this way, Since 69 and 70 is a near perfect and perfect coin which would put it as perfection and that has mostly to do with the state of the dies and the strength of the strike to give its flawless look. so if a coin has nasty polishing marks then it is no way near perfection let alone perfect. And grader's hold the coins eye appeal high on the grading scale.

PCGS and NGC do photo grading, don't they?

They do provide photo grading, but it isn't cheap. Eventually there will be graded examples that have sold on heritage, and their photos are good enough to see hairlines like the one on this coin.

Donuts it is.

If by "photo grading", you mean do they grade a coin based on a photo, then no, they don't. For an additional fee, they will provide high quality photos of a coin they are grading.

I ended up sending my coin back for a replacement and it arrived last week. This one looks much better, with no distracting die polish lines. The surfaces have more of a frosty BU look; the first coin appeared more prooflike IMO. I think I'll keep this one!

Congratulations on your second coin, looks like a real keeper. Did you take it out of the plastic holder for those pics?

Meckl9,
Yes, I opened the capsule and put the coin on a piece of black velvet to take the photos. The capsule doesn't open easily but it can be done, with a bit of patience. I wanted to be careful handling this coin; it's heavy and gold is soft. Easy does it!

Nice to see that you got a replacement in a timely manner, I was afraid you would not see one until summer or fall.

Looks fantastic! I also thought it would take much longer to get replacement.

That is one beautiful coin. I think this is the first time I've ever seen the reverse of one that looked so three dimensional.

That Coin looks much better. Other than pure asthetic value, I don't think the grade matters on a coin like this since it is a bullion coin.
