a few years back, just before the Australian numismatics' market was about to be flooded with an extraordinary number of $2 coins - the RAM was issuing many new $1 coins at the time - I wrote tongue in cheek that the next series of $1 coins will be 1 ) water has been discovered to be wet, 2 ) the sun rises in the east, and 3) a sock has a hole in it so that you can get your foot into it. Great revelations for us all. aren't they?
The RAM has lost the plot in its own self serving quest to be relevant and profitable. Still, with some 650.000 + AFL members Australia wide the RAM has tapped into a huge market with this AFL $1 series which should be very popular - that is, of course, providing the RAM somehow manages to realises it has to mint more each of these AFL $1 coins for the 18 clubs then what they claim they minted for the yet to be seen 1992 $1 Mob of Roos.

Oh great. Now I'm tossing up whether to buy the set for that 2.25% premium or just let it go. Noodling coins, especially $1 are going to get much harder from next month ...

I'll answer my own question as the RAM sent an email stating that the mintage is UNLIMITED, also buy each club coin separately for $5 if desired.

In other words these coins are limited to the number they can sell.

Called into the Post Office yesterday and picked up the two coins from the AFL set that are being released into circulation ... the other 18 I won't be worrying about.

I will get all of the new issue Woolworths coins. But strictly only from the till, at face value. Some coins destined for circulation will come in rolls, to be broken to stock the till. My daughter is a deli manager and part time check out chick at Woollies. I will just collect them, at face value, just like an enthusiastic kid. A good introduction for kids into the fascinating world of numismatics. This is really where the new collector policy of the Royal Australian Mint should be. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I won't bother with the carded presentation pack, at a much inflated price. I suspect that if you try to sell them in the numismatic after market, you won't get much above face value, if you also have cover a profit margin for a coin dealer, or shipping fees via ebay. So just destroy the pack, and put the coins into circulation Sorry for being so cynical. In future, I hope the Royal Australian Mint will not so cynically abuse new collector issues. R AM new collector issues are starting to smell a bit like those of the RCM. Sad

A set of the 2023 AFL coins sold this evening on ebay for only $32 - a lot less than the original retail price of $45 and much lower than the $75 some earlier buyers were paying on ebay in the beginning. If that is an indicator of what collectors think of the RAM's junk coins, I wonder how many more years of the AFL and NRL junk coins we will see? The next lot sold was a 2024 AFLset with an unopened tube (maybe hoping for colored coins?) for $40. Doesn't look like these AFL-type coins are highly regarded by collectors? I certainly wouldn't miss these junk releases.

If Australia Post continue with these types of themes (think NRL, basketball, soccer etc) I will either go broke or give up collecting. My preference is for coins in mint condition - maybe I will have to revert to circulated coins from now on? You can find these in new condition in coin rolls from the bank. Yes there is just too many coin from RAM to collect these days.
