Impressive set, carl! I picked these up at an estate sale a few years back. Don't know what happened to my Red Books from when I started collecting in the early '70s.  Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

I used to have a 1980 issue, but it was extremely worn out. I guess it got thrown out.
I found a 2009 issue at a flea market recently

I see what looks to be The Official Red Book A Guide Book of United States coins Deluxe 1st Edition from 2015 (Mega Red) also on the bottom. Did you not wish to get into buying all 9 editions of the Mega Red as the expanded sections do actually vary by edition and are actually quite helpful or is it just not in the photo. Or were you worried about your house caving into the ground from the weight  Thats the book where having different older editions might make sense to keep. Edited by datadragon

Nice set! As others have mentioned, I would pick up a new copy every 5 years or so, but that changed with the Mega Red editions. For those I decided early on to get every one. You do need a sturdy shelf, however...  Here are mine so far, and the 9th edition is on pre-order and should be arriving before too long.  Member of SPMC, FCCB, ANA and ANS. Whitman Publishing debuted the Handbook of United States coins in 1942 (blue book). The typical modern ones seem to go for around $3-10 plus shipping. I see a 1962 for $5.57 https://www.ebay.com/itm/404247211834 1965 for $12 or best offer plus shipping, and another few from around 1960 for $9.99 plus shipping https://www.ebay.com/itm/334457377802 So maybe more if its a very early edition. For those wondering, the Blue Book deals with wholesale coin values. These are the average values a coin dealer will offer to pay you for your coins (again generally as its not as up to date as other sources used these days such as greysheet pricing). The thing that attracted me is that each edition features a very informative section on a specific denomination (or denominations in the case of the 1st and 8th editions). For instance, the 1st edition had a special section on Half Cents and large cents, 2nd edition featured small cents, 3rd edition featured nickels, etc. For each date and mintmark in the covered series, there is extra information on each individual coin. Here's an example page ( Half Dimes were covered in the 8th edition, along with 2, 3 and 20 cent pieces as well as $1, $3 and Stella gold pieces).  |
