Outstanding find. What up with the date? It looks like it's been altered and the 3 looks like a 7. Can you post a closer picture of the date?

here's a close up of the date. I don't know enough about british coins to know if it is out of the ordinary. I'm guessing not, though. Image: date.jpg9.97 KB

From what I can see the date is either miss struck or has been altered to from 1831 to 1871. It seems strange that someone would put a later date on this coin.

Really neat find! I am partial to Farthings myself.

I have a 1837 farthing with the same odd '3' in the date. One year later the 1838 Victoria farthing '3' was slightly re-tooled to correct this flaw.

I have so many Farthings that are in EF shape between 1840 to 1899 you would not beleive.
I guess they are so small they have no wear?

Cool find, my weirdest circulation find was a Netherlands Antilles 25c in place of a US nickel.

nice find.according to my books, when the coin dies became worn letters and numbers were weak in apearance they had to be restruck by hand with a punch, resulting in doubled or sometimes trebled charecters, this was commom place during the time . but major misalignment only adds value to the coin. ie 1838 variety DEF. has only one dot where there should be a colon 1840 " " DEF..has two horizontal dots instead of a colon and many more 7over7, 2pronged tridents ,inverted V for A's and so on.
