Here's an updated picture and the weight on my scale I do know it looks more worn on one side then the other I don't know I'm hoping I didn't get scammed but I'm guessing a jewelery store would be the only way to tell now

Weight is good, scale may be a little off by +0.01 or 02. Half sovereigns seem weakly struck compared to sovereigns. Little detail in the tail, st George's or horse heads is normal. Flat legs is very common. And then this is worn?
I guess real, on first sight but cannot tell for sure with the detail shown. There are very good fakes.
Two things that seem a little wrong to me. Complete lack of the helmet relief in st. George's head. It is not just wear or a bad strike in st George's head. It should be better because the reverse is. And the concave-like ground line above the date, it should have a dip down over the 0. The first can be because the coin was damaged, the last may be there but not show well in the photo?

Thanks for the help guys I too am stumbled and have mixed feelings about this going to go get it checked tommorow, I agree with the relief of the helmet and head it is almost non existent but the weight was good when I was buying it and it didn't stick to a magnet so I figured it was good that I didn't get to examine it that closely Fingers crossed I will keep you guys updated!

Here's an update on this coin So it comes up as 20 Carats which is unusual for a sovereign the gold dealer basically told me it's not fake but its not what you usually expect from a sovereign as he has never seen one under 21cts I'm just returning it to the original seller he was nice enough to understand everything but I thought I would let you guys know and thank you again for your help guys !

When in doubt, cast it out. Personally I would take it to a coin dealer and not a jeweler. Appears real to me and I collect Sovereigns.

Thank you for the update. Composition shows it is fake. The british never deviated from the gold content.
There are very very good fakes. I once returned a sovereign only on suspicion because of weak details. Everything else was correct including composition.
Half sovereigns are the worse. Genuine half sovereigns have such weak detail that it is hard to evaluate that way, from looks.

They're melting at $227 USD tonight. While I don't have a good source for cheap ones there are ebay completely listings for July 2023 that are around $250 delivered (not sure if that's Canada though).

The premium over melt for small gold coins like half sovereigns is steep. However full sovereigns are standard bullion coins.

Seems like a lot of effort to make about $120 at today's prices. But I guess if you can crank out a lot of them. Interesting thread and thanks to all lending their expertise. The weak details was concerning but comparing it to ebay offerings, there are plenty there that don't look so hot. Could a good portion of those be fake too? So the only way to be definitive is to use the fancy jewelers machine? Is the amount of Au missing and replaced by Cu/Ag, be detected by size measurement?

Incidentally, the designer's initials (BP) do not appear on Victorian Veiled Head Half Sovereigns. They were introduced in 1904 during the reign of King Edward VII. You can check out photos of half-sovereigns here: https://www.bullionbypost.co.uk/spe...ad-1893-1901
