I'm a warbird fanatic, that's why I like this coin so much. Followed the airshow circuit for decades. YO-A was a Hurricane flying as a regular all that time along side the Lancaster, 1 of only 2 flying examples. They called Canadian Warplane Heritage home in Hamilton.
On Feb. 15, 1993, CWH had a fire in 1 of their hangers. The aircraft lost were the Hawker Hurricane, Grumman Avenger, Auster, Stinson 105 and Supermarine Spitfire. They saved the Lanc.
My friend and I road tripped to CWH the Wednesday before the fire. We were so shocked with the news having just been there. We have some of the last photo's taken of the lost aircraft, YO-A especially. That Avenger. and Spit were so nice too. At the next season airshow, the burned up wrecks were on display. Broke my heart let me tell ya.
I may be able to find those pic's. I'll try.

the Hurricane that was the backdrop for this coins release has a story all of it's own - and was in storage owned by the city of Calgary for some time; I am unfamiliar with how the RCAF gave aircraft their call letters, but this one is 5389 or "M". The booklet given at the coins debut says that this plane was the fourteenth Mk XII Hurricane produced, was initially flown the No. 4 training command in Calgary, then to No. 133 (Falcon) squadron in Lethbridge where it was assigned the letter "M". Fast forward to 1962 it was bought by a collector in Calgary, and then was presumably donated to the City of Calgary. There was something of a crap-storm when it was leaked that the city had this Hurricane, and was contemplating selling it to a collector - who I think would have moved it state-side. I knew this aircraft was being restored, but was not aware that it made it's debut some time before 2020. Maybe someone better at searching can find a better picture, because this is the only one I could find, Global and CBC were both present. I can always upload some snapshots I took there - but the Hurricane is obscured. The curious thing to me is that this aircraft never had a nose cone. it looks funny without it!

No luck with the pics from that day, but I remember YO-A and the Spit were mid teardown. Immovable. The Avenger was on it's wheels. I did find 1 pic of YO-A. Just beautiful. unruhjonny, I looked up your Hurricane hoping for a pic, but this is all I got. Not glamorous, but served their country. This book has huge info. One of my prized possessions. The lettering scheme was, the 1st 2 letters designated the squadron, the 3rd letter identified the individual aircraft. The book leads me to believe it may have been lettered FN-M at some time.

interesting - thank you for sharing that. I too am an aviation enthusiast - more over WWII aircraft. There was a nice Hurricane at the Flying Heritage Collection - I was sad to hear that this museum was permanently closed a short while back - I was honestly hoping to bring my kids to one of their themed 'fly days'. The FHM had recently finished a restoration on an wartime ME262, but with a brand new engine, made 100% authentic, except for better (read: not wartime) metallurgy; I was really looking forward to hearing that one in person... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flyin...Armor_MuseumBut back to the subjects of this coin, Hawker Hurricanes, and this event - When I heard that an unveiling would be taking place at the air museum here, I knew I had to be there. This is a snapshot from before the event started. Here are some images taken from the booklet given out at the event - there were a couple pages specific to the Hurricane 5389:

2 peas in a pod. Now that's some great background. Are you an airshow junkie too?

there are not many air shows around here... There is one down in Lethbridge, but I haven't been in many years - nothing old enough comes out for me.
That post I just made had me learn (I haven't been on social media much for the past couple years) that the FHM has recently re-opened under new stewardship!!
I am already dreaming of bringing my kids to a 'Battle of Britain' "fly day"... I even just emailed them to confirm if "fly days" still happen...

unruhjonny, you should check out the thread, Any Airplane Enthusiasts?, in General Discussion. You have to opt in, which is a cinch. I'll pull it out of hibernation. We hi-jacked this one enough.

Alas, I'm still waiting for my two Elsie dollars I bought August 4th to land in my mailbox. I messaged the seller about ten days ago to let him know I was still waiting, and told him I'd wait another 2 weeks before I had to go through the ebay process. I can buy the coins cheaper now on ebay than what I paid him for his coins, but since I bought from him first I'm hoping he has another two he can send me instead of getting a cash refund. Anyways, I feel bad about the whole situation.
