Banner should be under eagle's left wing.
I don't see that in this case; they appear fused together.
Vertical bars on shield have suffered a small, but significant dent.
Quite a few flat areas where there would be high points in the design, both sides, indicate that this coin has sustained at least some minimal wear.
Never seen an example of this type in hand,
so my grade opinion could be a little, or way off.
EF-45.
A survivor; very few people collected current circulation coins at the time when this one was minted.

Looks AU 53 to me but if a big auction house sent this lovely coin in then 64 would not surprise me one bit!

matching grades with a TPG on these early pieces is quite the challenge. how much do you take strike into consideration, how many marks are acceptable on a coin well over 200yrs old. this one is one of the better struck up ones. I'm seeing an AU coin. the challenge is which one. if this is a trueview then that throws a monkey wrench into this. I cant tell but due to the detail shown here I'm assuming that. TV enhances almost every coin I've seen and my rule of thump is drop it a grade using it. I think its between AU53 and AU55. I'm going with AU53. cool coin |

Buying this: complain about all the wear.
Selling this: explain it's just a weak strike.
PCGS: checks to see who sent it in.
Looks AU50 to me.
The opinions so far, EF45 to MS64, cover many tens of thousands of dollars in difference at auction.

As ArrowsAndRays pointed out, there is quite a range in estimations of this one. This coin is in a PCGS EF(45) slab, and yesterday I had the opportunity to see it in person. The abrasions on the obverse that seem so pronounced in the true view don't look so bad on the real coin, but the dent on the reserve that exists on the shield looks more pronounced. Is this dent usually the type of defect that yields a "details" grade? Or is it "market acceptable?" The details seem AU to me too--I was thinking PCGS net graded this coin because it is so rare. Did they give the dent on the reverse a pass too because the 1804 dime is so rare? What do you all think?

Slab grading often a good guide, but
we all must learn to grade accurately for ourselves.
Especially when it comes to buying 'raw' coins.
but even if slabbed, "buy the coin, not the slab".
These sorts of grading exercises are important.
