I look for errors and everything else you mentioned above. Regarding NIFC, I keep any S mint ATB Quarters I find. Their mintages are pretty low, but I find them fairly regularly. |

Thank you, all! Just one more question: How would you rank quarters, half dollars, and dimes, in terms of monetary gain for the amount of time spent? Granted, as coin roller hunters, we derive most of our pleasure from finding something interesting, or completing a collection, or saving history, but from a purely monetary perspective, which one is the most worthwhile?
This is my own understanding:
Quarters
- W quarters are probably $15 per
- Silver quarters are rarer and about $4-$5 per (melt value)
Half dollars
- 40% ones are more common at $3-$4 per (melt value)
- 90% ones are far less common at $8-$9 per (melt value)
Dimes
- More common than quarters, but 2.5 dimes = 1 quarter
- Each one is worth about $1.75 (melt value)
I understand the frequency of finds is different for each denomination.
What are your thoughts? Thinking of getting a box of half dollars to hunt this week, actually. Cheers!

AllSeasons, that is a tough question... but I will say you definitely need to keep any NIFC quarters you do find - they're low mintage and they rarely ever show up (at least so far for me)... Based on my overall finds the past several years, I'd almost call it a flat-footed tie between dimes, quarters, and halves. I've found two hoards of silver dimes (10 rolls total), 37 W quarters, and also several small hoards of halves... The most important thing, especially if you're looking for silver (particularly dimes and halves) is to seek out CWRs - they're far more productive on average than the MWRs in my experience. With quarters, since there is so little silver out there and because we're mainly hunting Ws, there is a little bit of an advantage in getting MWRs... This is going to sound crazy, but try finding a 1968-D quarter in circulation... They are VERY few and far between. I'm actually putting together some 1965-1998 Quarter books and that coin has eluded me for the better part of TWO months now. Not too long ago, I sold rolls of circulated, problem-free 1969 Philly and 1971 Philly dimes on ebay for $30 and $25 respectively... there is a market for the harder-to-find clad coins, as it turns out. I completed the 1965-1998 quarter folders with relative ease, having completed it in two boxes. It was enjoyable and I'm glad to have done it. I tried to get into the State Quarters and I stopped before I was halfway through. For some reason I have zero interest in it. I just don't understand the fascination with the W quarters or the State Quarters. The same I'm sure can be said for my nickels that I like to hunt though. Finding a silver quarter it really fun though, but the silver has been picked through. Dimes were fun, I completed the 1965-2023 in a single box. The 1971 dime I only found one specimen and thankfully it was not in bad shape. There is a guy who runs a small coin and card shop over in Sandusky, OH who went through over 2 million dimes to find a single 1982 no mint mark. He no longer enjoys dime hunting understandably, but he did find a lot of cool coins through his journey. I'm sure the same will happen to me once I've completed both 1938-1961 Jefferson nickel book that I'm working on. Either way, try the quarters out. You'll know after a box or two if you'll like it. Work on the 1965-1998 and complete it and go from there. Maybe set aside the State Quarters while you're working on it as well. The folders are inexpensive on Amazon. |

I have zero interest in the State Quarters as well, nickelguy88... and I tell people interested in coins to avoid them like the plague because there's not a single date with even a moderately low mintage - there will never be much value in saving ANY of them. The only exception, of course, being any "S" mint coins which may have escaped proof sets and those 2004-D Wisconsin error coins. I do totally get the fascination with the W quarters though - only 2,000,000 of each of the 10 different ones from 2019 and 2020 minted. It is a treasure hunt that is often rewarded... To date, I've found 37 of them so far including 9 of the 10 for the full set - only missing the "Bat Quarter" from 2020... CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Just the low mintages... you're talking 2,000,000 each for the 10 W coins vs 101,200,000 all the way up to 580,200,000 for the 10 P and D mint issues of those two years. CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!

Well, I got a box of quarters yesterday. It's maybe 50/50 between new and circulated coins. Went through 16 rolls and have found nothing so far. No W quarters or silver quarters. This is turning out to be tougher than I thought.

You will eventually find Ws, some proofs, and the occasional NIFC S mint or silver coin... The main thing with quarters if you're wanting to find something, particularly the Ws, is searching in quantity - you will definitely find them once you've picked through enough coins. One other advantage quarters have over every other denomination is they're far easier to dump than the others - banks almost always are wanting quarters as they're far and away the most circulating denomination out there. Quarters and dimes are TOUGH as they've been pulled from circulation due to silver content for DECADES.
Halves are a little more forgiving in my experience but still not easy re: silver.

I enjoy hunting through all coins but I have to admit, as I have gotten older the dates on dimes have gotten smaller and nickels jam the date in a tiny space making it more and more difficult to enjoy....same with the mint marks on the Quarters....has to be getting smaller, it can't possibly be my eyes.... j/k, I recently went in and updated my prescription and the new glasses are definitely needed, it makes it enjoyable to see how many balls and strikes there are when watching a game on TV... I have been guessing way too long :)

Well, I finished searching through my first box of quarters, plus 9 rolls. The only find was a 1974 10 yen Japanese coin that I will give to my daughter. I think I'm done with quarters for a while. Will stick to pennies and nickels.

Add a little luck sometimes. I got 2 rolls of quarters , found a W and a 'N GOD WE RUST' error in one roll.
You just never know, keep at it.
