Caveat emptor. Anyone who would buy an $800 coin from the Internet without any idea what they are buying is going to get what they deserve. It's immoral and unfortunate, but you cannot be a baby bunny in a den of wolves and accept no responsibility for your own actions.

I contacted the seller for grins, with "I'm curious what makes you think this coin is rare. They ALL have the FG designers initials."

Their response: "I'm learning and it's what the ai suggestion from ebay was . I'm new . But I've been talking to different people. I don't believe it is rare I'm not sure . I'll have to get it checked out more from a professional. Because I've had different people tell me different stuff."

I have no idea what they mean about "AI did it" but I've never posted on ebay. All I can figure is that the No FG half dollars somehow morphed into a dollar coin having FG being rare. But who knows what goes on in people's brains, especially when they think they'll strike it rich.

I shared a couple of messages with the seller as well. I can't say for sure, but he sounds like a young kid who is trying to make some money on ebay selling coins. No problem there. The trouble is, he doesn't know anything about the hobby or coin values.

The "AI" he refers to must be artificial intelligence. Leave it to computers to write a description that not even a scammer would ever dream up ("rare" FG initials?).

Anyway, I sent him a link to the coin's description on the NGC website so he could see the coin's true value. I also suggested he buy a Red Book. He said he's new to all this, is trying to learn, and thanked me. So I say, go easy on the guy.

Looking further, there are a bunch of these with "[Rare FG - Frank Gasparro]" in the title, or similar, with ridiculous asking prices. Maybe someone started this and ebay really is suggesting it in the title, I have no idea. There's even one touting "No FG" (rare of course) but the FG is plainly visible. There's no end to the nonsense on ebay I guess.

I've see a listing here of community members who sell on ebay. If I ever thought of buying via ebay the seller would have to be on that list.

...could be selling drugs or other illegalities, using coins as a legit front (look at this seller's other offerings..) ... not uncommon on this site ... notice the seller's 0 (zero) sales history & zero feedback ...
...on said site, search "error coin" in the 'SOLD' section, notice how many common error coins have sold for ridiculous prices ... notice that the sellers often have little or zero feedback or sales ...
examples:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/354881016706

https://www.ebay.com/itm/314759458837

...showed these to a Secret Service buddy (who chases bad paper) & he agreed with this assessment ... some type of small-scale money laundering ...

...most agency investigators aren't coin collectors, & coin prices are very subjective...

...these amounts are too small for any agency to investigate, ebay has no way to prove fraud (no complaints from the buyer), & IRS is satisfied, as taxes will be paid on these sales ...

...not just happening here, but happens world-wide on ebay sites ...

...happening locally here, (Memphis TN area), someone on Craigslist offering Susan B Anthony dollars for only $200 each ... probably illicit drugs or prostitution ...

...what can ya do?...

"interesting sale on those last 2 links you posted"

hey, deaborn ... you can literally find hundreds of these examples in the "SOLD" section on this website's "error coin" section ... not just USA, but European & Australian websites as well ... worldwide in scope ...

..enter "error coin" into the search box, then in the 'Category' selection, (left hand column), scroll down until you see the option for 'Sold Items' ... check that box ... the page will re-load with completed sales, & just look through the 1000 or so listings, notice the similar concurrences ... it's astounding ...

...again, ebay is not involved in this fraud, as there is no way to prove any wrong-doing ... some one (persons) have found a loop-hole to take advantage of ... & as long as the involved parties lodge no complaint, who's to say that it's not legit ...?

All this started when ebay stopped charging fees for listings.

It's the marketplace--a concept/practice that's been around for eons--warts and all. As always, buyer beware.

We have computers in our pockets and can easily look up that an SBA, unless it's a 79 Wide Rim, 1981, or proof strike, is only worth a dollar in circulated condition.
But we live in a sue-happy world and thus ebay and other vendors have to have protections to cover their derriere. Look at how many ads you get for lawyers for fire foam, hernia mesh implants, mesothelioma, Camp LeJeune, etc.
