Thanks for all of your thoughts. @kbbpll, I'm not sure if comparison to the Eric Newman is fair as it is graded higher. As such, I think the Newman coin deserves the higher grade and has less wear than my coin. For ease of comparison, I again show them side by side.

The Troy Wiseman coin sold for $264,500 in 2006. It's already bid up above that to $300,000 with 12 days to go. It will be a bellwether for the strength of the higher end of the market.

Another fun comparison is with the 1794 dollar that was in the famous Louis Eliasberg complete collection of U.S. coins. That coin was graded XF45 by PCGS. Looking at it side-by-side, it does not appear to be in a higher grade than my example IMHO.

The 1794 NGC XF 45 dollar is not in the same ballpark as the other 1794 PCGS dollars that are pictured. It is in an NGC holder for a reason. It was previously in a PCGS Genuine XF Details Altered Surfaces holder.

after looking at all the comparisons i'd say yours is a better example than the weisman and eliasberg. don't think it would edge out the newman as well as kbbpll's example as an AU50 grade. thanks for sharing those. interesting compare

Your detail is better and the patina in more even, however I prefer the color of the other two better. Something tells me your coin was monkeyed with long ago. I'm nitpicking of course. Yours is an outstanding coin and deserving of the grade.

Thanks again for all of your comments. This sold tonight for $528,000. Almost exactly twice what it sold for in 2006. Not a great rate of return for that buyer which I calculate at 4.073% APR if he realized the entire final amount (not likely) over 17 years.

Between the NGC and PCGS CAC example, it is a comparison of originality other than detail. The NGC looks better than a 45 but lacks all originality, likely net graded. The PCGS CAC example is solid and merits the grade.
