I was not aware of the rim protecting the surface. Do you mean that the relief of the rim is higher than the surface relief?

Yes the rim is a little higher to protect the design surface. They should be okay in tubes. However if you are going to take the coins out frequently to look at them just be careful, don't let them bang on each other and wear soft gloves in my opinion

Should be safe enough for storage if you're careful about putting them in the tube. And it wouldn't hurt to use a filler on top of the coins so they can't shift or rattle inside the tube when you move the tube around.

Thank you. I already put the filler so that coins can't move when it's not full. Are the gloves necessary if I don't touch the coin with the nails? Oil from the skin isn't supposed to damage gold, that's not sensitive to fat. Am I wrong?

I do not like using gloves because they make me clumsier than I already am. As long as you handle them by the edge you should be okay.

In effect these are bullion coins, so having scratches shouldn't lower the value, their value is basically the precious metal component but every time you put a coin in or take it out, it will hit another coin so in time the coins will go from (exampel) MS69 to MS65. Hence as these are bullion, it shouldn't make a difference but it might.

I really appreciate the answers. If some of you stack Krugerrands, do you use capsules or only tubes? Another question: have you heard about the new security features on gold Krugerrands? I read that a tiny "Krugerrand" word is now engraved on the mountain in the background landscape. My LCS wasn't aware of this.

Coin stores will cite any excuse under the sun to offer you less for your coin. Minor scratches don't matter much with bullion coins. Just avoid heavily scratched ones unless of course you can get it at a great price!

I would use capsules. Tubes are fine too but with gold, just buy capsules unless you're storing hundreds of them.

I have a small case going into a small safe so I don't have enough space for capsules going into a tube. That's why I wanted to put bare Krugerrands in a tube. It takes about twice less space...

Newer 1 oz gold have very small lettering 'krugerrand" as you said as a security feature, you can see it with a magnifier. I don't know if the lower gold denominations have it. Other bullion also have tiny security features as Britannia, Canada Maple Leaf. USA 1 oz gold Eagles have a missing reed on the edge but it's not very secure, easy to copy. You can use the search line in your browser to find out more about bullion security features.

To glove or not to glove is a personal choice, to each their own. I don't use gloves with my ancient coins but do when buying and moving valuable modern coins from their packaging into their new home.
