One dealer I knew had a few of these lightweight pieces around that he let people handle. They feel light and insubstantial, not like what the silver coins do. 3 grams light doesn't seem like much but you can sense it when you hold one.

A very helpful fact: no US coin prior to 1827/1828 can have a raised rim! That's a dead giveaway if you see it, so always check the rim first.
