Reminds me of the churches in Wisconsin. I was married in one that the floor looked like it was there for hundreds of years. HMMM.

There is a really old church that dates from the early 19th century not far from the house. I am also wondering about some of those old churches in the downtown area.

while growing up, well, getting older anyway. I went to a Parochial school in Pennsylvania that had grates over the window wells, I used to take the coins that fell into the wells out and spend them on candy. Like Log Cabin Fudge and Bonomo Turkish Taffy, MalloCups all that stuff. That was in the 50s, the school/church is still there, but they don't sell candy like that anymore.

I've got a couple coins and token that I found in walls, ceilings and floors of old houses. I've got quite a collection of "junk" found in old houses.

My local church dates back to Saxon times. Unfortunately it doesn't have floorboards!

no floorboards will make it a lot easier to dig. When do you want to start?

When I first read this post a few days ago it really reminded me of a scholarly journal article that I had read a few years back. Just to make sure that I wasn't just dreaming this, I found the article again. In The March 2005 Scandinavian Journal of History (Vol 30, No.1) there was an article about coins that were found beneath the wooden floors of stave churches in Norway. Supposedly in one instance coins were found ranging from the middle ages to the later part of the 20th century. Since coins collected there for centuries as the old church was in use, I'm certain that this must have been enormous.
