"4cm is about dollar size isn't it?"
A quarter is just a hair under an inch which is 2.54 centimetres. 4cm seems small to be a dollar? Is it a half you think?

wow I can't believe someone else that is knowledgeable in this type hasn't chimed in but I am sorry to tell you but the coin looks like a definite fake to me, I have never seen one dime sized but I have seen the design like yours on copies of the dollars that looks like yours where it looks like Liberty is growling. I am absolutely no expert on these things but this sure does look like the copies I just mentioned and since there was no dimes like that minted with that date that kind of makes me think it is fake as well. Here is a link to the Bust Dollars that are known fakes and if you scroll down to the 7th picture with the caption above the coin saying "COYOTE" you will see a 1799 counterfeit that I was talking about http://home.comcast.net/~reidgold/d.../page_7.html but I am pretty confident in telling you this coin is not real even if it is the size of a dollar

Is it just me, or does the bird on the reverse look more like a chicken then an eagle?

It is dollar sized. 39 - 40mm, or 4cm

to CCF. Really interesting object your grandfather left. If I were you, I'd have it framed.

I am fairly new to this, but I got curious and was researching the coin. There was a silver dollar from 1799 that from what the Red Book says was 39-40 mm which is 4cm. sounds close to your coin, but I am not an expert. may give you something to go by.

I was reading others opinion. My first thought too was that the head of the eagle looked really off.

It appears to be a fantasy coin,a dime if that is the size. From the images it is a cast piece and not a very good casting as it is rather mushy, meaning the details are not sharp. It is possible to get very good detail on a casting. I have done lost wax casting in the past. I would guess it may not be silver but possibly white metal which does not often cast well. What a fun "coin" toke though!
