Very nice and a new stage too! At first glance, my first thoughts would have been a clash.

Perhaps the hub came in at a relatively steep angle relative to the die, allowing a point near the rims to touch first. There are some other examples of very misaligned hubbings where the operator seems to have caught the problem as it was just starting. It's a neat DDO and a beautiful silver coin. =)

Quote: Wow! That seems truly odd. I don't think I've ever seen that far of a shift on a Doubled Die. Crazy Steps Jeff wants to have a word.

Thanks all and happy to share some pics! Really is an interesting and odd doubled die. And easy to forget to glance up there on those coins to check for it, but by posting I hope a few others might learn about it and perhaps find more of them. Surely there is an EDS out there waiting to be found.

Interesting find TB and observation Stoneman. (Get some rest TB and we'll see you on your next break from the caves.)

It's always nice to learn about new varieties that we were not aware of, and this was one for me, thank you for starting this thread. As I mostly deal with Lincolns, this is outside of what I'm familiar with but thought it would be fun to see what was on the bay, given it has the nice "light motto" as a marker. I found, like many other varieties on the bay, that it was littered with light mottos, that are mostly, nothing more than wear, due to circulation. Just like anything else, you have to be aware of what to look for and how to pick out what is real and what is not. A question though. Are there real light mottos that do not have the DDO? I felt like I did see some that were actual light mottos but could not see the doubling on the R.

I think I may have dug around and found an answer to my question. I found a nice read on NGC about the light motto that helped somewhat. It refers to a "hub" and hub only, so not sure if that is a working hub or master hub, that was from the 1932 quarter. It was used again in 1934 for a short time, estimated 500,000 quarters struck. This being said, I guess there are different working dies that came from the weak hub and then probably those with the DDO and those without. NGC LINK https://www.ngccoin.com/news/article/670/
