tough series to grade. I was taught to look at the buttons in the C and the Star radials. strike issues were very common due to thinness of the planchets. some were even bent during striking and strikethroughs are also. you can see this as the star is coming through on the reverse very prominently. several star radials are notably weak. also when grading these keep in mind strike issues the shield outlines. this one is pretty sharp.
before buying raw I would learn everything I could about them especially if you are going for higher grade examples
no doubt in my mind that the coin is MS. not sure what their thoughts were on the scratch in the shield. the others look like contact marks to me.
MS64 and 65 may be possible on this one. I can say I don't think I saw one with that massive amount of gold toning. hoping it graded straight

It seems the vast majority of you guessed between MS(62) and MS(64). Those who split the difference agreed with PCGS. Yeah, the scratch in the shield looks so big in the photos, but so miniscule in person, given the size of the coin itself. A couple of you expressed concerns about the splotchy toning, but it just looks like toning to me, not something that seems to be corroding the coin. I wish the pastel colors on the reverse came out better in my photos. I like the color, the luster, and the die clashing on this razor thin coin. I especially love how prominent the star from the obverse is on the reverse. This is a type coin for me, and not one where the budget is especially high.

And wonderful PIDT that I should have called out.

Thanks, @BStrauss3. Can I ask what PIDT is? It is a term I have not heard before--does it have to do with striking through debris?

Progressive indirect design transfer, or ghosting of the star design to the reverse die. Agree, nice example!

Thanks, @Zurie! Was I wrong in calling this "die clashing?" Can I ask what is the difference between PIDT and die clashing?

It's not really a die clash, since the image is transferred gradually through the planchet over multiple strikes, rather than from a direct hit of the obverse and reverse dies. Here's a better explanation. https://www.error-ref.com/progressi...gn-transfer/
