While a fake sale would make sense from the standpoint that the coin doesn't seem worth that much, what would someone on ebay have to gain by a fake auction? You have to pay ebay 13.75% of the sale price. Is the goal to set the basis of the coin for a future sale?

The variety got an FS number (401 I think) a few years ago and will likely show up in the next edition of the Cherry Pickers Guide (if they do another edition).

Since the FS designation, PCGS now attributes the variety :

https://coins.ha.com/itm/errors/197...ption-071515.

It's just not showing up on Coinfacts yet, but NGC and ANACS both attribute it and it showed up in a recent edition of the Red Book.

I suspect part of the reason for the high value is that because the variety was not "discovered" until 40 years after it was minted there was no effort by the collecting community to find and preserve examples so it remains very hard to find, especially in higher grades.

Not if the sale is cancelled for non-payment. The shills are there to try and suck in a real buyer - none bit, hopefully. Look at the bids, the answer is right there. 0 feedback buyer has 90% ++ of the bids = new acct. Automated bidding firing every 2-3 seconds in clusters.

Fake sale Brandmeister - look at the bidding. Definitely one or more shills involved.

I agree the first 'shill' was continually updating its bid every so many seconds to drive up the price.
When I'm bidding on something and I see that, I stop bidding and let the item go.

Adding a pic of the mintmark location from one of the auctions for educational purposes:

That's interesting. So PCGS attributed it as a minor variety on that HA slab. I was unaware that the 75D had a new CPG entry. Where do those even appear if they haven't been published in a book edition?

I am still hazy on what someone would gain by running a fake auction on ebay, aside from maybe hooking in a buyer for more money than they should have spent.

Nickels continuing the Three-legged Buffalo tradition of minor error fervor.

You can add the 2005 5¢ Speared Bison and the 2000 $1 Wounded Eagle into that category. And I guess the Spitting Eagle quarters. The Bugs Bunny Franklin halves, too. It's a long tradition. =P

There's no denying that they are popular. I believe they also receive quite the hype in Strike It Rich with Pocket Change. I still found the prices to be a little shocking.
