A short update on the hunt. This afternoon, I got started with the 143 dollars from 1972 Philly. My reasoning was that the 1972 Type 2 $1 is the key coin, so I might as well start there. I believe I found a strong candidate for a Type 2 in the first batch of coins. That coin has already been posted on the variety forum for confirmation. After getting about 3/4 through the block this evening, I have also found four examples of what appear to be DDO-003. That is the strongest DDO for the 1972 Philly dollars, with nice notching on ERTY and distortion on IGWT. I will photograph and post one of those tomorrow. Finally, I have a small stack of possible weak DDO coins that show the notching on the serif of 1. Overall a very fun hunt so far, I am hoping that the other years are just as enjoyable. =)

Finished with the 1972 Philly block tonight. Found another three DDO-003. Also found another Type 2 candidate. I knew as soon as I flipped it over. It has a deeper relief than even a Type 3, and the gleam is much more intense than the circulation strikes. I could be wrong, of course, but I think it's pretty solid.

Quote: I'm not photographing 200-300 circulated Ike dollars. I want to have a good variety search list, go through the coins, and post any finds for evaluation and confirmation. Well said. Quote: Jbuck, that was a good link. My pleasure.

Quote: That's just a darn lot of Ikes. I would say that over 50% of them are still in mint state. Lots of golden toning from being stored in an attic. Barely any Denver coins (not terribly surprising), but I was overall really surprised at the condition. There are hardly any coins below AU grade. Spending them is a great idea for the heavily circulated ones. Especially the bicentennial Ikes, people just really like those.

Quote: good work so far Brand - sure is a lot of Ikes Thanks. It turned out to be way more than my initial guess of 200-300. Once all the bags were emptied and sorted, the hoard ended up at over 500 Eisenhower dollars. Somewhere between 25-30 pounds of metal!

I currently have over 600 Ikes on hand and am still adding to them.
Is this an unusual quantity?

As mentioned, the Friendly Eagle Variety is often overlooked. It would be on the 1971-D, reverse. Look carefully at the eagle's face. Most have an extra line over the eye, making the eagle look angry. The FEV is missing this line, hence the name "friendly eagle".
In a large lot like this, you should have at least 1 FEV, I would think. I have found 13, 4 from Ikes from searching customer dumps at the bank, and 9 from large lots of Ikes.

Thanks for the reminder. =)
There was only a single 1971-D in the hoard. I would say that the mix is 20:1 in favor of Philadelphia. We are in eastern Pennsylvania, so the coin mix here tends to overwhelmingly favor Philly.
