decided to look at numismedia on the Barber dimes. Why do they have the 1894-S listed there? Wasn't that a proof only strike (with only 24 examples)

Ralph and mycrob: Congrats on the Barber dimes! I'm working on this series myself and was wondering about your 1895-O. If you don't mind me asking what grade is it and how much it cost. nod2003: Yes, the 24 proof examples of the 1894-S were minted under "questionable" circumstances and nearly everybody considers this coin unnecessary for a complete set.

I am down to the 95-o, the 13-s, and the two mint marked 96's. Slow and steady.

TreasHunt - I know they are, but given my age and my health, I don't know if I'll be around to wait for the nicer ones. And, too, that little old piece of a check the VA sends me each month doesn't stretch very far - after the bills are paid and groceries are bought, there's not a whole lot to dedicate to my coin collecting budget. I only started collecting coins around four years ago, and it's never become something that I perceive as a money-making venture, nor have I ever considered it as an investment thing. I just enjoy this fantastic hobby, and I'm probably as happy (maybe more so) when I get a new "old" coin that I don't already have, as someone who acquires a coin worth thousands. I do have some nice coins, and some, maybe not so nice, and I've saved them (obverse album pages) on photobucket, reduced them ther to medium-320x240 (whatever that means) - I'd like to post them in the member's image gallery in order to share with others in the forum, but I can't figure out how to get them from there to here. I'll figure it out one of these days. Anyway, my collection is mainly for my own pleasure, and fun for me. I fear, if I ever get into worrying about how much it might be worth, I'll lose some of that fun, and then it wouldn't be so enjoyable for me anymore.

Ralph, Congrats on the completion. I have finished my Half set, 1 away on the quarters and a few on the dimes. Takes a long time to find the right coin for the album. : )

It's easy! You do have to make sure the Forum gurus have approved you to post your images. You also may have to sign in again on that page too. Now just click on the US Coin Image Gallery on the left side of the Navigation menu. The "Create/Order my albums". It'll walk you throguh the process. Remember to follow all the directions and load 10 pictures at a time. And after uploading you have to individually insert each file into your new album and add whatever file data you want. I've put three albums on there last week. It does take a little time but now everyone can see the coins! Enjoy, my friend!

Thanks Moe - I've got all that in place, but the problem arises when I try to post the pics - I don't know how to transfer them from photobucket to my gallery - I'll keep plugging along with it, and sooner or later, I'll figure it out. Then again, maybe someone here can explain the process to me - I don't doubt it's a simple process, and, once I get the first one transferred, it'll be a piece of cake to get the rest.

Ralph: Good luck on the next set. I believe it is the quarters.
Tough set there. If you have the chance, grab any 1913 P-- very tough without problems. The 1892 S is also tough, many are cleaned.
good luck.

Well guys, I finally figured out a way to get pictures in the member's gallery - transferred my saved scans to photobucket (obverse only, but the reverse of each is similar to the obverse) - reduced them there, created a new folder in my documents file, transferred them back to that folder in my computer, and then I was able to post them in my own gallery here on the forum. Kinda like takin' the long way home, but I finally there. Should you decide you would like to go take a gander at what I've put together over the past four years, know that the majority of my collection is circulated (what my coin collecting budget demands) and some are very, very circulated. It's not a real big collection, and not necessarily something to be envious of, but it's brought me alot of enjoyment, and I wanted to share it with the members. I think I enjoy the chase more than the getting, so saving up alot to buy a super nice coin is almost impossible for me. As I said, the fun is in the hunt (for me).

I dunno Ralph, I've got a bit of envy goin on. I just checked out your pics and it looks like you've been busy in those four years.
Congrats on finishing the halves BTW.
I looked to see what part of Ill you're from (I'm originally from the Champaign/Urbana area) and was surprised. My dad was raised in Mt.Vernon and my grandparents moved there from McLeansboro. I've got a ton of relatives around that area, I even had a shirttail cousin play basketball on the team with Brian Sloan way back when.

TSOTL - I grew up here - joined the Marine Corps back in '65, and pretty well stayed gone (other than an occasional trip back to visit with family) up until 2003 when I moved back to stay. I'm closer to Jerry Sloan's age - most of the older folks here have pretty well followed his basketball career since he was in high school. I'd venture to say that most folks have their tv tuned to the game everytime the Utah Jazz is playing - kind of a local hero. Another local boy that went on to play pro sports (football) was Carl Mauck. Not bad for a little ol' town of around 2,000 - huh?

Wonderful, I love Barber coins. Also easier to get them under FMV than most series; the reason being that people often will underbid on ebay if its not blatantly obvious that 'Liberty' is showing (even though you can be 99% sure based on the overall detail).

Yep ShadowCreator, everything I've read so far would indicate the Barber Series has been long overlooked by collectors; however, I've been seeing more written about them recently, and I think they might possibly be easing their way toward the spotlight. It may be that the scads of new collectors (myself included) who began collecting with the Statehood Quarters have most of the modern day issues in place, and are beginning to eye the older coins for their collections. That is, of course, pure speculation on my part, but I do believe that the coming years will see an increased interest in this series. Ralph
