IMM is popular now with this date after The Cherry Pickers Guide introduced, but I agree with the overall consensus this appears done with abrasive cleaning especially on the obverse, the reverse appearance are better from second photo, how is the luster?

I would go for another option as well. Those hairlines bother me as well.

Don't believe this would straight-grade.

Well, you guys are confirming my worries, unfortunately. Sometimes I really do wonder about the strictness of details grading at PCGS. For example, this dime is 12/6 for pop: https://www.pcgs.com/cert/84149697In this condition, what is the coin really worth? It's a relatively uncommon variety. I can't make heads or tails of the PCGS auction records—two VF35 and one MS63 all sold for around $175 several years ago. No sold comps on ebay, just asking prices that are all over the map. I don't remember any sold coins on GC, either. Is such a coin worth anything raw? What about in a Details slab? What about as an AU pocket piece?

Just walk away, man. Stop trying to talk yourself into it.

Coinfrog, that's probably the right move. But mint state specimens of FS-501 are not all that easy to find, so I'd like to understand my options. Also, I just want to get the mental process right in my head, because this is the second time I've encountered such a situation, and it's probably going to happen again in the near future. Quite possibly with the other dime that I bought this week.
@macmercury: The coin actually looks beautiful in the plastic flip, and even looks good under a 3.5x loupe. Without strong magnification, I would never have seen the lines.

Brand - yes or no, do you want to own this coin raw, yes or no. I'm guessing not. Get off the fence.

I already have a nice AU specimen of FS-501 in my personal collection, and I am quite satisfied with it.
I cherry-picked the coin above with the intention to trade it or liquidate it.

Love Mercs but not my series lots of hairlines on obverse would hold me back. Are the IMM actually scarce? I have one in VF and see them on ebay frequently in VF but never in AU or MS coin looks UNC details.

Are you still undecided on this?

I decided to keep it.
I had to outbid at least one other person to win the auction, so the coin has a notional value of at least that much. It wasn't clearly identified as a rare variety, which increases the value. I will study it, document markers, and probably put it up for sale in 366 days. If for no other reason, than because the prices of such coins are a mystery, and the entire process will provide me with some insights.
