Now stop it. You're making us all jealous up here. As before, good luck. You're in the sweet spot.

Thanks! Also... You said they don't circulate there anymore? If I may ask, why is that? I mean, the difference between not minting a particular coin and not circulating anymore I would think would be two almost entirely different things. I kind of figured that they would still be out in circulation and used, just not produced anymore. Quote: Outstanding! Quote:I use a Kaskade album from Lighthouse. https://www.lighthousecanada.ca/can...-1-cent.htmlIt has clear pages so you can see both sides, does not have holes for set years/varieties and doesn't cost an arm and a leg. It has harder plastic inserts so the cents won't develop PVC damage like the cheap blue albums. Thank you. I'll look into it!

Cents are not used at all here in Canada since 2012. Purchases are rounded up or down to the nearest 5 cents, if paying in cash. If you purchase something with a credit card, it's not rounded up or down and it's the exact price to the cent. Most merchants won't take them. Lots of piggy banks up here with money that can't be spent.

No 1 cent coins were minted after 2012. The vast numbers of existing one cent coins were supposed to be taken to banks to get redeemed and ultimately destroyed, and it didn't take long before merchants stopped accepting them. That is still taking place but on a very small scale now compared to 2012. Huge quantities still remain in collections and hoards, and my guess is that will still be the case decades from now. I therefore doubt that most will ever be worth much. The Canadian large 1 cent was withdrawn in the 1930s but there are still plenty of the common dates available.

So is it legal to still possess them in Canada?

Quote: So is it legal to still possess in Canada? You can still possess them but banks are obligated to return them to the mint when they get turned in. ( That's not to say that they always do though)

They are still legal tender, but subject to rounding. Most merchants don't want to handle them and will not accept them so they no longer circulate. Banks are obliged to accept them for deposit and submit them for recycling.

@Humanist1287 - In 1997 the RCM started minting copper plated zinc (non-magnetic) cents to 2012. In 1999 they also started minting multi-ply plated steel (magnetic) cents to 2012. To add to the mixture you had the 2003 old effigy & new effigy in both cpz and cps. Lots of fun keeping them all straight. .... ps. I also have a 5 gallon wine bottle full of cents. Too heavy to lift.

I have collected Canadian coins since I was 10 years old. After 63 years of collecting, I have been able to complete cents, nickels, dimes and quarter sets mainly from circulation change in central Minnesota. Have had purchase some to fill in. See very little Canadian now days.

I rarely handle cash as it is, as I prefer digital for ease of purchase. Quote:Humanist1287 - In 1997 the RCM started minting copper plated zinc (non-magnetic) cents to 2012. I don't know if I will get into all that, though, since Canadian cents are already pretty scarce enough as it is! I might get a Dansco plain cents album to house them in. Not sure yet.

There are actually more Canadian cents in circulation now in the United States than Canada.
Hehehe.captain obvious here but it's true.
In my CRH for pre-1983 cents, I encounter a lot of Canadian pre-1997 cents.
So a good place to find Canadian cents is in cent rolls in Michigan.

That's crazy. Honestly, I encounter a lot of Canadian cents of all dates. I am getting so many of them that I don't know what to do with them. I started a 2x2 collection of them recently, though. I don't really see many newer ones, though. I have yet to see any 2009's, 2010, 2011 or 2012. It seems like the most common ones I come across are 1998, 1999 and 2000. I believe I have most of the regular strikes from 1961-2007, with the exception of the 1971. Not sure why that's so hard to come across. I don't have any of the varieties. I have 3 or 4 cents from the 40's. Evidently, older cents can be had on ebay for still relatively pretty cheap.

Humanist1287, I'm just down the road from you (9 Mile & Hoover) and have a few hundred Canadian cents you can search through, although I would charge one penny each if you find ones you need. My Whitman folders are complete, except for the 2010 steel cent and, of course, the 1936 Dot. I do have a 2010 steel cent, but I think it's either from a proof or specimen set, not circulated. I also have a bunch of other Canadian denominations if you're interested. I tried to e-mail you but can't on this website. Let me know if you ever want me to pop over. (Tom)
