yes, remove the cladding that came loose. See if any copper from the core is on the cladding. Also get an accurate weight of the entire coin, then another measurement with the cladding removed and not on the scale. May be measure the weight of both pieces separately.
This is a good study coin.

I wonder if I just doubled my money by splitting the coin? I could slip the reverse side into paying for something with change, then use the obverse side somewhere else.

I have a coin like this except not in two. And like yours it has Kenney there as well. I believe that it was a Mint mistake. If you look closely you will just be able to make out the A (HALF) just under the L in Liberty, The parting of his hair is at the top of Roosevelt head. Put a half dollar next and check. Same for back. Eagle
