Here are better images of one coin. so far more members are again cleaning/dipping the coin. The only factor that has me considering Cleaning/Dipping the coin is Eye Appeal. How would this coin grade as it looks now? I don't want to use the word "clean", I think we all feel that's a no-no. If I preserve the coin with a dip, do you think the grade would improve? Appreciate the feed back, thanks.   |

I consider that coin beautiful. Maybe MS 64 or MS 65. Cant tell for sure but it looks like the cartwheel effect of a BU coin is shining at mostly 2 O'clock and 9 o'clock on both obverse and reverse. It's definitely a no clean coin IMO now for sure. Nice pictures too! Good job!  |

Beautiful coin. I'm with some of the others. I wouldn't clean it.

The pictures are much better and that coin should go MS64.
I would not dip it. There seems to be a lot of confusion about dipping vs. cleaning. Cleaning is a dirty word in numismatics. Dipping a silver coin for a few seconds is not improperly cleaning, it is often called conservation.
Be that as it may, you have a valuable pre-'21 MS Morgan that I would not dip. The toning is not unattractive so I would leave it as is.

Agree. I am of the opinion that a coin that old should look old, not like it was produced last week.

I guess I am old school on dipping and it stuck in my head not to do that, I think my reasoning was ( perhaps I was told ) that sometimes carbon spots might disappear with a short dip but they come back in time in the same exact places anyways.
I wonder if the cartwheel and/or luster is dulled each time a coin is dipped?
Me, I would rather the toning, it seems to tone so far and stay the same at some point. Almost as if it is a natural seal against oxidization. Which I think is what the toning is anyway.

BTW, I think this coin is perfectly fine with the rim toning. |

I think if not cleaning the coin will result in some sort of damage you should do it. Otherwise, you should generally avoid it. If you have a really dirty circulated coin - not in great condition, dipping might be fine.

There is no way the bright white luster of a "cleaned" coin would surpass the aged beauty developed here.

Oh PLEASE don't dip that beauty. I don't know what it grades offhand but its very attractive and I agree with the poster who said they'd rather have that than a blast white. Leave the dipping to the ebay gang ... present company excepted of course.  Bruce |
