Quote:So, given my wife is travelling, and I could spend some time, I sorted through containers of change I have been collecting for 20+ years. I got a lot of copper pennies (a few wheaties, one lousy Indian head), plus a few foreign coins, and a big chunk of quarters- mostly
ATB and States. So I ordered the collection books for
ATB and Statehood and thought just fill what I can for the fun of it. I got at least one mint mark for 32/56 (57%)
ATB and some two mints, and 31/50 states plus PR (at least one mint mark, a few w/2, 61% of states + PR). I have a number of extras on mint marks too (are their trading programs on this site?). Again, this is just for the fun of it, but if they keep debasing currency, the metal value of the coins may exceed face soon (I already collect nickels and Cu pennies because this is the case).
You can sure see people hording nickels over the last several years. There even seemed to be a strain back before the collapse of the LME nickel contract in '08. You just don't see many old nickels any longer and most are common dates in abysmal condition.
I don't know what's going on with copper pennies but I know JohnQPublic isn't the only one setting them aside. What's funny is the percentage of coppers tends to remain stubbornly constant (with downward bias) despite high new mintages. In other words the evaporation of zinc pennies is nearly as high as the intentional withdrawal of copper cents from circulation.
