CoinForMe, the Coins and Canada site lists 1896 "near 96" and "far 96" varieties under 5 cents 1896 - Average auctions prices and values. Based on measuring the spaces in your pictures, my guess is that your left picture is a "near 96" and your right photo is a "far 96", in relation of those two digits to the 1 and 8 in the date. Hope that helps!

When you use that site and go to specific information about a coin, this shows up as a link below the varieties listed View the average prices of certified 5 cents 1896 sold at auctions » Clicking that link takes you to average prices in auctions of 3rd party graded coins for last year and this...
That's where I saw the far 96 and near 96...I believe they were both MS-64 coins..

CoinForMe...now the detective work begins... who graded these 2 coins, and why did they call them "near 96" and "far 96". Good luck with your search!!

CoinForMe... found it, it was ICCS and both were in the Cornwell collection, sold July 20, 2023...so if you wanted it TPG'd they'd recognize it as either/or, me thinks...

@Bucsfan, the only Canadian 5 Cent coin I have is on the top of the first page, which is a PCGS MS62. The two you see later in this thread, I was trying to show the difference in spacing between the 6 and the 9. Those are not my two coins (I had the photo in one of my picture folders)...
