I recently got this Licinius I with consular bust that has a workshop not listed in RIC Licinius I A.D. 318- 320 AE nummus 19mm 2.9g IMP LICI-NIVS AVG; laureate and draped bust right, globe and sceptre in right hand, mappa in left hand. PROVIDEN-TIAE AVGG; campgate with three turrets and no doors, lambda in right field. in ex. SMH delta RIC VII Heraclea 48 It looks like Constantius has an earring; but that would be unusual. You can find Roman coins that show earrings on females; but not on men. Maybe this is just how one engraver made an ear lobe. For now, I will definitely say it is an earring?. It's also neat that the engraver didn't finish the shoulder, like it is disconnected from the rest of Constantius II. Constantius II A.D. 329- 330 AE nummus 19mm 3.2g FL IVL CONSTANTIVS NOB C; laureate, draped and cuirassed bust left. PROVIDEN-TIAE CAESS; campgate with two turrets, star above; wreath in left field; II in right. In ex. SMALA RIC VII Alexandria 52 and my latest Valentinian III A.D. 425-435 AE nummus 13mm 1.1g D N VALENTINIANVS P F AVG; pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right. VOT PVB; campgate with no doors and two turrets, P above. In ex. RPM RIC X Rome 2123

Quote: I need to work on my collection lol I never intended to collect campgates; but one day I noticed I had a lot, probably several dozen. After that I started organizing them and actively looking for interesting or rare examples and now I have over 120. I made a page for them mainly so I could easily keep track of what I have and know quickly what I need or want. https://constantinethegreatcoins.com/campgates/

There are some beauties on your site Victor. Is there a particular place that you use for your purchases? I have been looking a lot on Vcoins recently as they seem to have a better grade of coins than ebay. There is one or two on in your Vcoins store that I like the look of, funds pending!

I buy from everywhere-- ebay, Vcoins. MA shops and assorted auction houses. Typically, ebay does have lots of junk; but every now and then some nice stuff shows up. I got the coin below from ebay. The condition is mediocre, but it has a dot in the bottom of the doorway; which is a variety not mentioned in RIC. Crispus A.D. 327- 328 AE nummus 19x20mm 2.4g FL IVL CRISPVS NOB CAES; laureate, draped and cuirassed bust left. PROVIDEN-TIAE CAESS; campgate, two turrets, no doors, star above; dot in bottom of doorway In ex. SMANTA RIC VII Antioch 72 var.

Quote: didn't finish the shoulder, like it is disconnected from the rest of Constantius II. Old battle wound? Lots more eye candy, even for a guy who doesn't collect ancients. Can't really think of a medieval equivalent. The chatel tournois is so stylized it doesn't really compare.

I just upgraded my "eyes to heavens" campgate and what is neat is that it is a coin that I sold 13 years aga and always regretted it a bit. I saw it for sale today and quickly bought it. Constantine I A.D. 328-9 19mm 2.8g CONSTAN-TINVS AVG; diademed head, looking up to Heavens. PROVIDEN-TIAE AVG; campgate with two turrets and star above. In exergue SMK delta dot RIC VII Cyzicus 57 I also recently added this example from Rome; which has a workshop that is not listed in RIC, though several are known. Constantine I A.D. 318- 319 19mm 3.4g CONST-ANTINVS AVG; cuirassed bust right wearing laureate helmet. VIRTVS AVGG; campgate with no doors and three turrets; across fields P-R In ex. RP RIC VII Rome 166

Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures
