Quote: but as a side bet I wouldn't be surprised if they deemed it BN instead of RB.
PCGS grades RB when the copper coins have less than 95% but more than 5% of their original Mint "Red" coloring. I imagine CAC would follow the same practice?
Alright so here is the reveal! It actually doesn't surprise me that the majority of you called this one out as RB. I felt the same way. I actually just won this coin at auction. I was drawn to its amazing eye appeal, warm color, and relatively clean surfaces for what CACG is calling a 64BN. I would have called this a 64RB at very minimum, and a very strong shot at 65RB. While I have not seen the coin in hand yet, I did see an unedited video from the auction house, and I do think the eye appeal should have made it a 65.
Once I see the coin in hand, I will decide the next steps. There isn't much upside from a 64 BN to a RB, but there is a decent upside if it jumps to a 65. Not totally sure if I will keep this one for my personal collection (which to me is more about looks than the "upside").
I may send the coin in the CACG slab to PCGS for a crossover attempt and ask for a 65 and leave the color designation blank to let them decide. If it crosses to a 65 in either color it's a win, then I'll submit to CAC for a sticker attempt. If it doesn't cross, I might truly gamble and send it raw to PCGS—in which case I can't imagine them not at least calling this coin a 64RB.
Here's the CACG slab photo, and video from the auction.
Well, my gut said 64RB based on the first set, then I scroll down. The first pictures are massively over lit and cutting the patina.
64BN seems right based on the second data set. In terms of hits it's a 65 but there are spots and things in the fields that would keep this out of gem. I don't see any cartwheel luster either. The first pictures are pretty deceiving.

I hate to have to quote myself, but I have to quote myself. Because...
Even though I am surprised at the 64, I am not surprised they designated it Brown.
Is it a bit too conservative on both grade and color? Yes..
But I think that's their goal, and at least they can guarantee that it's a minimum of 64 BN ? for whatever that's worth.
Though it is unfortunate, I do however believe that the right buyer will see it for what it is. and would pay closer to the 65 RB price, especially considering the green bean.
So is it worth resubmitting? Either way I wish you luck.
Coin arrived! I actually fully see how it was considered brown now that it's in hand.. I still think a 64 is harsh, and should have been a 65. Thoughts? Here's a video I shot.
The lighting cuts through the toning and accentuates the luster. It looks like some mild diffuse toning based on the auction house video, so BN seems reasonable. Very close to a 65.

I would sit with you at the blacjack table and "let" you have the last seat (decision maker). My buddies and I call it "the man with the 10 gallon hat!" You could send it raw to PCGS asking them to conserve it...just something else to think about I think it's a 65...but then you have to weigh the cost to have it conserved... It's a nice dilemma to be in... I ALWAYS hit 16 when the dealer has a 10 showing... It would drive me crazy if I didn't... How you gonna play "the man with the 10 gallon hat? Hit or stay? Fantastic coin either way! smat
Sorry...I got carried after coming back from the casino with my buddies and having a "couple" of rye's (wink). Yesterday I was the man with the 10 gallon hat...and the first shoe was in our favor... We all walked away with a couple bucks and I guess I just got carried away with my reply? Again...sorry for that...especially because I didn't even comment on your post until after the reveal. I look fwd to whatever direction you take. It's a very beautiful coin! smat edit time of day
Alright, the coin is on its way to PCGS in its CACG slab with a request to crossover at a minimum of a 65. I truly can understand its BN designation, so I did not specify a color to crossover. I also know that there is minimal if any upside to it being a 64BN CACG vs. a 65BN PCGS, but I really want this coin in a PCGS slab for my registry (albeit only if it hits a 65 so the CPG price stays the same for resale value).
Will keep you posted when it returns in 20-30 days!
