The C has a hit that moved metal, along with the first A in America and the first 9 in 1939. Still an epic doubled die and an awesome coin. =)

I would grade the obverse at XF40, reverse at VF35, for an overall grade of VF35.

That's a great DDR. I'll go a little lower than Brand at VF30.

This is a variety that I never scored during my nickel CRH days. I searched through 394,800 bank roll nickels and found 221 Philly mint 1939 examples - not a single one with this DDR.

Holy moly, 211 is an insanely low hit rate for 1939 (P)! I've searched 1000 rolls and found at least 15-20. Are you sure that you aren't throwing them in the 1959 bucket? The dates look very similar to the naked eye.

I'm terrible at grading these, but I'll guess VF.

Why does the building look so worn out and the letters still look good. Is the building higher up off the coin than the letters and takes most of the wear?

That fact plus, from die wear, the building is usually not struck well to begin with on the older dated nickels.

I guess they didn't like the "gash" on the building with that little scratch underneath of it. Fine with me though - Bid + BP + S&H came to a total of $26. I'll take that any day!

Wow, F12 seems punitive. The examples in PCGS Photograde look way worse than this coin. I could understand that if they net graded it, but it's in a Details slab.

Regardless, that's a great price for the big dog DDR on Jefferson nickels. Congrats! =)

I had this one at VF-20. Guess I need to study PCGS photograde again.
