If we're getting in the Time Machine..... In 1979, gold experienced a historic, rapid surge, rising from roughly $226 to over $500 per ounce by year-end, driven by the Iranian Revolution, energy crises, and high inflation. This explosive 74% annual increase made it one of the best-performing years for the metal. Deja Vu all over again!

True, at least for the aftermarket. However, the Mint sharply increased their prices a few years ago and I was feeling nostalgic for those days.  |

I've got a few ounce bars I paid less than $10 for, premium included. Ah, the good old days between the Hunts and the 2011 runup, when silver languished below $10 spot forever. Along with millions of others who did not, I wish I'd backed up the truck back then.
But it was so stable, for so long...it kinda got boring. 20/20 hindsight.

In the timeframe of when that purchase was made that I posted, you HAD to buy $100 worth at JM Bullion, but then you got free shipping. But they wouldn't sell to you anything under $100. So I knew this was a good price because I had to buy 6 to get over $100, I was so happy. I was buying 5 and was over $100, had to bump it up one more. |

I've posted about some of the Canadian $5, $10 and $15 Silver coins (all 36 mm in diameter) that I've added to my collection of Canada's 36 mm Silver Dollars. In all cases, I set a reasonable budget for each coin in its respective series and practiced "purchase patience" to stay on track.
Of course, silver was at a far different price point then. It's not likely I would pursue the same collections at today's market prices. I just don't see them as a "good value" at today's price points. I understand why they command higher selling prices, but "understanding" does not close the deal (at least for me)!

I guess I grew up poor, I didn't get an allowance. But, back in the 1960s I earned my pocket money by scouring the roadside for discarded deposit soda bottles, which were good for 5¢ each. Find a half dozen, and you had enough to buy a bag of chips and a large 16-ounce soda with 25¢, plus a bottle to cover the deposit. Most places don't even have bottle deposits nowadays. Disposable society, that's a shame. |
